Next week Sunday (May 19th) there will be protest marches all across Europe, calling for a Europe for everyone, without the ultra-conservative nationalists and right-wing populists that are currently gaining hold all across the EU.https://yestochange.eu/I will be in the protest in Cologne, will you join your closest one as well?

@blaubachn If they believe theming is bad in general, why even allow it?If it's certain themes breaking your app, as @mooshoe said: Talk to the people making those themes. And fix GTK's theming so it can't break apps.Having a capability to customize and then telling people to please not use it just seems weird to me.

@blaubachn Why not ask Ubuntu to fix their themes, then, instead of asking them not to apply theming at all?

@blaubachn They are addressing the right people, but with a weird message. Why isn't the message "Please fix your themes" instead of "Please keep the default themes"?

Steam Big Picture Mode now finally has Steam Play (aka Proton) in its settings, allowing me to activate it on my Steam Machine without the need to start desktop mode.I tried it with Deus Ex: Human Revolution and it worked flawlessly!I hope the Steam Machine idea will be picked up again once SteamOS is at a point where it actually makes sense.I, for one, love the idea of playing PC games on Linux on the TV!

After I've just rejected another project offer from a company whose company values I disagree with, I started thinking: Wouldn't it be great if all of us IT people could band together and sign a pledge not to work for unethical companies? If enough of us did it, given how hard it is to find good people in our line of work, we could have a real impact!Agreeing on a definition of "ethical" would not be easy, but I bet we could find some common ground.Let me know if this proposal makes sense!

@jwildeboer Yes, that makes perfect sense, but I'd still want to say "We'd only work for ethical companies according to our manifesto.".I want companies to feel that it's not just nice words, but it will have an impact on their recruitment.

@jwildeboer Absolutely, being positive is always better than being negative. As a psychologist, I should have phrased it in a positive way right from the beginning. Oh well, thank you for reminding me :)

@ohyran Transparency is one of the EU's biggest problems, though there have been significant improvements in that regard recently. For example, the EU now has a mandatory transparency registry where meetings between MEPs and lobbyists are recorded, something which e.g. Germany does not have yet. There is still a lot to be done, but they're working on it, and the fact that the EFA faction has grown with the recent election will help.@Matter

@illyrion As @jwildeboer already mentioned: What we should do is write a list of criteria for what we consider "ethical" instead. Agreeing on those criteria won't be easy, either, but we love challenges and problem-solving, don't we? ;)

@jwildeboer Agreed, an overall score probably isn't of much use. If someone e.g. cares a lot about sustainability, they won't work for a company that checks every box _except_ for sustainability.@shellkr @illyrion

@jwildeboer As for the indicators: I think we can borrow a lot from criteria that various NGOs have already developed, no need to re-invent the wheel. There are already criteria for various areas of corporate responsibility out there, we just need to select the ones that make most sense for us.@shellkr @illyrion

@brandon The whole campaign against the "all bodies swim" is in itself - to use PNN's words - a thinly veiled attempt to brand anything that doesn't fit into the conservative world view with something that is universally considered "evil".I can see that parents may feel uncomfortable with such an event, but if they don't trust the venue's personnel to prevent attempts at child molestation during the event, they could have just sent someone to keep an eye out on the children.

@brandon It's also tragically comic how something which is considered perfectly normal in other cultures is made a huge deal out of in the US.In Germany (especially East Germany), for example, nude beaches are very common, most of them do not have a minimum age to visit at all, yet I'm not aware of any case of child molestation happening there.Germany's recent massive child molestation scandal happened at a regular, non-nude camping ground instead.

Last month, in order to block a climate bill, Oregon Republicans fled the state and threatened to attack police sent out to retrieve them. That's one fine democracy you have there, America...https://nonprofitquarterly.org/guns-over-votes-oregon-republicans-kill-climate-bill-by-quorum/

Thank you @federicomena for reminding people how to disclose security vulnerabilities (especially in FOSS projects) in a way that is beneficial for everyone. We need people who check open source code for security vulnerabilities, because bugs only become shallow if enough eyeballs actually turn to them. But we also need those people to report them in a way that does not do harm.https://people.gnome.org/~federico/blog/on-responsible-vulnerability-disclosure.html

One of the reasons why the FOSS world is often split when it comes to political topics:FOSS attracts mainly two quite different crowds: The user freedom aspect (plus lack of state control) attracts many staunch libertarians, whereas the aspect of cooperating "for the greater good" (plus lack of commercial control) mostly attracts progressives. It's actually quite surprising that those two groups, who usually hate each other with passion, can cooperate on the same thing.

I just learned about http://www.their.tube/ . It's a site that simulates the YouTube recommendations for people who live in different political bubbles. It's useful if you want to show people how YouTube's recommendation algorithms drive people ever-deeper into their bubbles, resulting in more extreme world views. And of course the software they use is open-source, you can find the code here: https://github.com/kihapper/TheirTube
