https://stopthemingmy.app/I don't understand why these GNOME guys needed to make this. Why not actually reach out to the developers of the distros that ship custom stylesheets rather than complain to everyone else?

@mooshoe That site is hilarious. What a crock. "Stop changing the defaults! What do you think this is, some sort of customizable Linux distro?"🤔

@ndegruchy @mooshoe I don't know. If have to agree with them on this. It would be really annoying to maintain a GNOME app and have Ubuntu theming make it look weird by default. Not only does it make you look bad, but you also get probably get tons of bug reports for various themes because something doesn't work right. Then you end up focusing on making sure your app works with the theme of major distros. They aren't calling out people for theming. They are calling out distros for theming.

@blaubachn If they believe theming is bad in general, why even allow it?If it's certain themes breaking your app, as @mooshoe said: Talk to the people making those themes. And fix GTK's theming so it can't break apps.Having a capability to customize and then telling people to please not use it just seems weird to me.

@colomar At least from what I understand, GNOME does not support theming. People have just swapped out stylesheets and icon files. So the issue is that a distros like Ubuntu sometimes break apps in such a way that users have to download the GNOME tweak tool to switch over to the Adwaita stylesheet and icons. Even then, sometimes they have changed icon names, so you get random things in the distro that have the default unknown icon, or now have the wrong one.

@colomar I only use Fedora with GNOME, because they present it like it was intended to be presented. I run into a lot less issues with theming. This is especially an issue with distros like Ubuntu: aka the gateway distro for many people. People will just assume that the app developer screwed something up if they don't understand this issue.

@blaubachn Why not ask Ubuntu to fix their themes, then, instead of asking them not to apply theming at all?

@colomar That's what they're doing with this website:"Please read the letter all the way to the end. This is aimed at distributions breaking apps by default, not tinkerers playing with their own setup."

@blaubachn They are addressing the right people, but with a weird message. Why isn't the message "Please fix your themes" instead of "Please keep the default themes"?

@colomar Because it's impossible to actually "fix" the themes. They aren't going to download and test every app against their theme. (Ie. UberWriter) This is about giving developers the sanity to have a consistent platform. It's not written by GNOME, but by a few devs that write apps for it which are on the fringe/get forgotten during theme development.

@blaubachn @colomar I think they should simply take the bug reports, close them and pass them along to the theme developer as that is where the bug belongs. If Yaru theme for example breaks an app - I am sure the Ubuntu and Yaru devs would love to know.Asking Ubuntu to not use their visual communication is kinda... the more I think about it its like writing petitions to remake the last season of Game of Thrones. Understandable but unrealistic.
