@stux A million percent. The internet used to make me happy. Ready to do that again.

@stux The American health care system makes me second guess getting treatment. It’s a terrible system.

@laurenI have a couple online accounts where 2FA via SMS is the only 2FA method offered and I use it because it's better than nothing. When Twitter launched “Login Verification” in 2013 SMS was the only option then. The people who enabled it were taking the best possible action! Using an authenticator app wasn't even possible until 4 years later. I eventually updated to let 1Password handle it, but how many people never did?2013: https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/a/2013/getting-started-with-login-verification2017: https://thenextweb.com/news/twitter-now-supports-two-factor-authentication-apps-heres-secure-account

@lauren As a former marketer I was quite surprised he killed Twitter's communications team because I'd argue that Tesla & SpaceX's comms are who built his personal mythology and brand. Many of the crises he's caused in the past 3 months were communications related. For example, Twitter's relationship to 3rd party apps and the API has been rocky for years, but better communication could have smoothed out some kinks and even made him seem innovative and entrepreneurial as he pushed for changes.

I totally missed that yesterday was my 1 year anniversary here on mstdn.social. I wanted to give major thanks to @stux for maintaining a great little home on the fediverse. It’s a nice reminder that the Internet is made possible by cool and interesting people.

@seth I tried using the Advanced Web Interface for several months but honestly found myself liking classic more. It’s much more similar to how I use a mobile client and is less distracting.

@simon @eloquence In a recent post, I tried to replicate something I’d tried before and there seems to be some recent effort on their part to prevent major hallucinations like this. A similar prompt earlier this month hallucinated an entire episode of This American Life with a fake title, fake segment, fake people and fake Spotify link. But I agree, even if it’s saying the right answer now it could and should do that with better formatting that highlights that fact.

I’ve posted more on Mastodon in the past year than I did on Twitter in the previous 4 years. Its equal parts because of the audience but also the psychological safety of the environment. Keep the vibes flowing fam!

@stux In anticipation of Meta/Instagram officially announcing and launching #Threads (previous codenames P92 / Barcelona), it sounds like we could be headed for the same technical issues again except Threads users could potentially be real Fediverse citizens.I know others here may have strong feelings about this (namely, they want to be far away from centralized social media), but since you said blocking bird.makeup was more of a technical decision I'm curious what you're thinking for Threads.

This whole #Reddit debacle reminds me of when shopping malls started to really crack down on teens loitering and then less than a decade later most of them were fuckin dead.

@stux I know you’ve said you’re taking a break, but I just wanted to show some support. I’m thankful to have such an amazing instance admin who cares so deeply about launching and supporting fediverse apps. I also feel like what you shared about no “free pass” is extremely fair. Thank you (and George and Washy) for all the time you put into make an Internet home for us.

@tommertron @tchambers Do I like Zuck? No. Do I like my family, friends and colleagues? Yes. Blocking Threads doesn’t prevent Zuck from harvesting my data, it prevents me from keeping in touch with the people I want to connect with.

@stux I'm sad that people aren't even willing to give it a chance. Blocking the instance won't stop Meta from collecting data in other ways but it will stop me from being able to stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues.

@stux I appreciate your pragmatic view of things. I don't know all the Admin options regarding federation, but if Threads is allowed to launch in the EU is there a way where only users who want to interact with Threads can be allowed to? Kind of like how unlisted/followers only posts but with federation?

Trying to recall details about a long-gone podcast (RIP #Dailysonic), I started looking through various pages using @internetarchive's Wayback Machine. There's a unique thrill in unearthing info long gone from the surface web, but what really gives me chills is finding forum posts and comments with my old username. It's like chasing a digital ghost and catching a glimpse. It reminds me of how much I've changed and how much remains the same.

@foone I did some of this the other day (and to my surprise successfully!) but the whole time I was kinda wishing I had the digital equivalent of a lock pinning tray to put all the little screws and bobs I was trying to figure out.
