Hmm.. I was just checking an found that the 'instance' (not really) "bird.makeup" takes up over 1.9 million accounts..This website only makes accounts from Twitter appear on the Fediverse but they cannot see it from Twitter nor react so it's kinda uselessTo clear up space in the database that I'd rather use for the Fediverse instead of Twitter I'm gonna block the domainThere are plenty other Twitter mirror sites like that one but this one is just far too big

I hope this is okay with you all.. :blobpray: It's not a matter of content in this case but pure for database space! The space is muuuch better spend on you all instead of Twitter right! ❤️

@stux that must be like a huge portion of the fediverse

@stux yeah, those sites also bridge content of users who don't consent to this. I think this goes against the spirit of the #fediverse

@stux Been seeing a lot of bird.makeup accounts in the feed. I'll miss a couple of accounts, but not 1.9 million.

@stux I’ve blocked them (as an end user). Absolute junk getting in my actual feed.

@stux I'd rather that accounts choose to cross-post. So losing NYTpitchbot is fine. I even recently got burned by a fedi bot account whose autoreply said go to their website to comment. No dude, I comment here.

@stux only reason on still have a twitter account is so that I know what’s going on at my American college if an emergency happens or if the unthinkable happens.

@stux You're good with me. I was considering blocking the domain myself, so you made the decision for me. Part of my effort to de-twitterfy my fediverse.

@stux I think it's okay, because I come here to interact with people.I can't interact with passive repeaters, so it seems like a tiny loss.

@stux Out of curiosity - is it possible in Mastodon to simply label an instance as "not stored", so that your users still can see/follow the accts, but your instance doesn't cache anything? Seems like it'd be a nice feature for this type of stuff...

@stux I absolutely understand why people dislike bird.makeup and why you want to block the domain. I follow about five bird.makeup accounts for particular journalists because despite all efforts they refuse to use Mastodon. It’s just faster to read them on Mastodon via bird.makeup and I can avoid going on Twitter at all. I’ll miss that but accept your decision

@stux I will admit personally that this puts me at a bit of a setback since I rely on mirrors for reporting stuff at times, and RSS just isn't the most pleasant thing to browse.I'm probably gonna have to get all my bird.makeup followed accounts set up on wetdry.world.

@stux I hear you. I only use it to follow accounts that only post on Twitter. Mainly my municipal government and a couple of public figures. I don't normally interact with them anyway, I just want to know what they're posting and I don't want to have to go to Twitter to do it.To me, bird.makeup provides a useful service, but I only run a single-user instance. I totally see where you're coming from when you're running a larger instance.

@stux Is the site even usable any longer? There's no longer a working API for Twitter for a reasonable price.I have it blocked on my server but it's showing that connection attempts are failing.

@stux In anticipation of Meta/Instagram officially announcing and launching #Threads (previous codenames P92 / Barcelona), it sounds like we could be headed for the same technical issues again except Threads users could potentially be real Fediverse citizens.I know others here may have strong feelings about this (namely, they want to be far away from centralized social media), but since you said blocking bird.makeup was more of a technical decision I'm curious what you're thinking for Threads.
