I've been getting a lot of DM/PMs recently on the internet with random people either complimenting me or just flat out hitting on me. Because of how I look irl I get pretty hostile, thinking that people can only be attracted to girls who are pretty and therefore must be pretty desperate to go after me.Which is obviously not true, I could see myself liking someone I've never seen before or someone who isn't physically attractive. I've been trying to be nice to people who do this now but I never know what to say so I get super sarcastic and joke about it, but that usually comes off as just as mean. Even if they do get that I'm just joking around it probably doesn't feel good to work up all that courage only for me to laugh in their face.I did get pretty close to one guy but he wasn't into the stuff I was. I don't really do much outside of tech so I think he just lost interest in me. This whole justifiably terrible body image and heavy focus on my career kind of makes it hard to form relationships with anyone, let alone just becoming friends with people. A lot of people who I would consider close friends are usually pretty dry and professional even if we don't have a professional relationship which I guess is the type of people I should expect to attract being essentially a coding machine now.

@Pyretta @crushvYes, a bigoted social structure can form in any community, I just fail to see how an open-source project would be any worse in this regard. If you get kicked from a free project you can just fork it and create your own with like-minded individuals. Yes that can also apply to people who were kicked for legitimate reasons but you can just not support those projects. With a propitiatory project you can't really do anything about that and you're SOL if you don't like the project maintainers. If they add something problematic to the TOS or they add a malicious bit of code you just have to live with that or stop using the software. Open-source and federated projects like this are also really good at preventing censorship of any kind allowing you to expose these terrible devs without them really having any control over what you can post. If they try to censor what you can see? Just move. Also with the comparisons to the Minecraft modding community most of that community is a lot younger than most coding communities, usually in their angstey hormone filled teens which (while that doesn't excuse them from being so terrible) is why that kind of culture exists.By supporting libre and open-source you're giving more control to the people who are unable to join the corporate IT world due to social taboos, stigmas, etc. Yeah, at the end of the day it does support the silicon valley as they use said software as well but you prevent them from dictating how or why you use those tools and it's just a win-win for everyone.

@crushv Apple is the literal embodiment of evil and I feel sorry for anyone who thinks otherwise. I have no idea how a company that screws over it's consumers that badly still has said consumers. I will never understand the appeal, I don't get what people are getting in return for putting up with these terrible business practices.

@Ocean22 @ilovecomputers I actually really dislike software that goes for it's own look like what web browsers and Discord are doing. I kind of like the uniformity that GTK and similar libraries allow. I just want to edit my theme once in my DE's settings and be done with it without bothering with how themes work in every independent program.

@lainThey should be within their right to do this but that doesn't protect them from being a laughingstock for attempting to thow forced monetization methods that a lot of fedi users have been trying to avoid. My major issue with it is that it's website seems to be made with the intention to mislead the user into thinking the Albin team was solely responsible for the software's creation with only a "oh yeah, btw it's a Mastodon fork" on the project's github.

@RafiX @miwilc @Ocean22 While I agree that it probably would be good to have something for super important contacts like this, you guys are acting like he needs his face in a screen 24/7 why not just get a flip-phone or something? I don’t think he needs anything fancy.

@crushvI think it was necessary to have a first instance but now that there are better instances and websites like joinmastodon.org and distsn.org exist, I wonder why it's still such a big noob trap.

@cdmnkyTbh I'm actually not 100% sure why people are freaking out about this. IBM and Red Hat are pretty similar companies and IBM already has a huge influence on the Linux scene. Is it just the realization that you can buy out a distro that is putting everyone on edge or did IBM actually do something bad already?I get why this could be damaging to the Linux scene I suppose. I have always disliked Ubuntu's popularity, not because it's an objectively bad distro or anything (although I don't like it, most of the reasons why are purely personal preference) but because I don't trust Canonical. Microsoft is already a huge partner of their's, desktop Ubuntu is their biggest competition next to MacOS and they have already bought GitHub.Tl;dr: I don't actually think IBM buying Red Hat is a problem but it means Microsoft realistically could buy Ubuntu, which is a realization that will keep me up at night.

@SavagejenA lot of stuff like this could be avoided if the average user avoided closed source plugins.

@crushv They're the same box though, both get filled when you type. I was sort of hoping I'd be able to type multiple posts at once like Pleroma's default fe. This is obviously a bug but I kind of want it to be a feature, having your panels being sandwiched by the home panels seems like it would be convenient if you have a lot of them pinned.

@prydt I'm not very sad to see this this dying off because of the reasons mentioned in this screenshot but I do agree that the more the merrier especially since a lot of these HTML engines seem to have problems. That and Chrome's 60%+ usage worries me.

I really wish this was a feature in Pleroma and Mastodon. I know people could just not mark their bot's accounts as bots to get around this but it would still be nice to have. (This is a screenshot of Misskey)

I wish Pleroma and Mastodon had poll support, probably my favorite Misskey feature.

@OliviaIt certainly looks better imo, especially because it has themes. I still prefer Mastofe because the multiple timelines makes more sense on a landscape display and I like pinning hashtags. I find myself using Pleromafe more now though.
