@freemo Anyway, this has been fun, but I'd prefer to avoid arguments over the definitions of words, so I won't be replying further. Thanks very much.

I left my laptop power adaptor at work AGAIN. I should just buy a spare.

@canageek I'm an idiot, so I don't know if different wattages will fry my laptop? What about different amperages?

@freemo are you quoting somebody else there? Or is this your own opinion?

@freemo An 'undocumented tenant' is a squatter. Squatting unused property is enormously beneficial both to the squatters and the larger community they interact with. It helps alleviate pressure on housing and can bring different kinds of diversity to an area. It is especially good in terms of fostering creative projects and especially arts. If one believes the most important aspect of communities is private property and rent-seeking, then such a person would obviously object to squatters, but for such a person the entire notion of community is secondary to seeing power at other's expense. Of course, this metaphor completely falls apart in terms of migration because the US is not private property and migrants tend to hold jobs and pay rent and taxes. The tax monies collected from all migrants, including undocumented ones, exceeds the amount of tax money allocated to programs that benefit them.

@freemo Calling someone 'illegal' is dehumanising and using false statistics to to aid scapegoating is a step further. While crops sit unpicked in California and the US is the relative freedom of LGBT people a cornerstone of its justification for aggressive foreign policy, the obstacles put in the path of asylum seekers and migrants generally are not helping anyone at all. This ideology has a name and I'm afraid it's extremely unflattering.

@freemo Comparing your edgy humour about your experiences as a tourist to the actual experiences of migrants does not excuse or justify the views you've expressed. I'd like to ask you to consider why you want to use dehumanising words to refer to migrants. Also, real numbers show migrants are helping to making funds available to a welfare state (such as it exists). You may also want to consider why you believe otherwise. What made this lie compelling? What did it make you feel emotionally? What do you feel when you think about migration? Who do you picture when you think of an undocumented migrant and what makes you want to put that person in their place?

So, once in a while, I'm socially called upon to be the 'good immigrant' and I when I perceive this happening, I always push back against it. The difference between me and other migrants is essentially luck. I happen to have had the means to navigate and intentionally confusing mess of paperwork and did not happen to face much trouble when I tried to ignore the rules. It may seem tempting to take advantage of the privileges of being a good migrant, but it's not actually helpful. People who are concerned about bad migrants generally aren't going to be the friend of any migrant and any in with them depends on pushing others down. Any gains made this way are conditional, fleeting and leave everyone worse off. Lifting up all migrants lifts up all migrants. A more welcoming atmosphere makes things better for all of us. Theresa May's hostile environment is, for the best placed of us, an expensive nightmare. Being a 'good migrant' is to be used as an excuse for things like that

@freemo Why on earth have you chosen the term 'illegal immigrant' as your hill to die on?  It's primarily an american term used against migrants to the US. It's clear that they really don't like this term. Why antagonise people who are worse off than you?

Hello fellow members of the #UCU! If you have received a strike ballot, can I encourage you to fill it out and return it? If you're planning on not returning it, because you're not sure you want to strike, please just vote 'no' instead. Not returning it is like double-voting no because of the rather draconian rules about participation percentage. (If those rules had been applied to referendums, Brexit would have failed by default!)

@shit If you're not sure and are planning to abstain, then double voting 'no' isn't advancing your interests?  Also, unions are supposed to be democratic and I'd say it goes against the spirit of the union to exploit a government anti-union initiative in order to advance your view. People who want to vote no, should just vote no.

This is a #GNUsocial instance. It's got some bugs, but it looks like the platform is no longer being actively developed. It does not support Activity Pub, which will cause it to gradually de-federate as new services use the newer protocol. All the other GS instances are shutting down or moving to pleroma. I recruited a large handful of users to join this instance, but they didn't like the the UI and all but one wandered off. The pleroma interface is more desirable. It's now officially on my to-do list to migrate. I'd hoped for a tool to migrate databases, but I don't think one was ever built (and I do want to learn dB programming, but I've got a few other projects right now.)

I am concerned about plastic waste and my uni buys extremely terrible whiteboard markers, so I got my own that can be refilled and one of them has run out. The only source I could find for the refill ink is Amazon. So I bought it. Trying to address systemic problems through individual capitalism will always fail and it's exhausting.

Attn AlgoNoise.social users: this instance will be migrating from GNUSocial to Pleroma over the coming weekend. The primary reason for this is because my ISP has made a complaint about the excessive mysql queries generated by this instance. Pleroma is under active development (read: a bug report about a similar issue would actually be addressed) and it is designed to run with extremely low overhead. Given the choice migrate or go offline, I feel migration is the best option. There are scripts that are meant to allow migration without data loss. I will make every effort to preserve logins and data, however, you may wish to make your own backups ASAP. @blazpavlica @cybergazz @dafydd61 @debbyfriday @dktr0 @francis @laurenredhead @midigirl1990 @mxjxn @novadeviator @oscarsantis @rebecca @sk @stringbender @testing @uiae @wooloogooloo @yaxu @zorei
