@rhgrouls #elementaryos is often praised for its simplicity but I’d choose a more classical distro. To get the original vibe, you know. For personal productivity I have installed #linuxmint and #ubuntu on a few old Macs.

Quick question: do you use GUI software catalogs to install new Linux software, or the usual CLI way?In the end, I still find CLI easier and more clear. And Flatpak (or similar stuff) helps a bit. Not so much that I use it extensively, but helps.GUI catalogs can help new users coming from Win or macOS, but my impression is that they always give a false sense of "all is fine here".#linux #flatpak

@Moon @i Probably a lot of people are so used to walled gardens that now find hard to realize the real power is in their hands.

@Rasp Good. Being unproductive in a capitalist society is an act of rebellion. You’re a certified rebel now.

@kaia Nah, they're turning them into a single sentient blob which will drip down to the center of the Earth, crystalize there and rule the Underworld.

@kaia I understood that the lower part is always active even when you're not watching TV actively. So the real "brain" is there, probably, calling home regularly to download ads and say "I am fine".I suppose that reverse engineering this communication is enough to take control of the system. Also, the product concept is so absurd that the company behind this will be bankrupt in a few months. Bricking everything, like in a novel by Doctorow. So hacking this is an act of anticipated justice.

@louis The first time I read that book, I got lost in the first chapters about lists, lists, lists. If you’re new to Lisp, surviving that part is the real trick. Then things get more interesting and, after a while, the first part gets a wider sense.

@kaia Hmmm... I suspect someone will apologize for something quite vague and that's it. Of course there will be many people saying things like "well if you go to a Rammstein concert you deserve everything, they're evidently a bunch of degenerate satanists and all those who listen to their music are offspring of the Devil incarnate".

@Polychrome I always thought that Bond is simply a mcguffin for all the things that happen around him and to him. In almost any 007 movie the simplest way to deal with Bond is to let him drink martinis and chase bondgirls somewhere far from the actual place where you’re trying to conquer or destroy the world. He’s not so smart to understand that something’s happening, until Moneypenny calls him.

@tante The post has its merits. My impression, tho, is that its assumptions are... debatable. The idea that a platform must "win" gaining more and more users, whoever they are, is for me... well, outdated. Internet it's not a zero-sum game.Distributed protocols are inherently un-scalable, as blockchain proved, and massive federated networks are, I think, unfeasible now. Mastodon can't "win" against centralization's ease of use.The real question is: is this a problem? I don't think so.

@Rasp But if they are your friends, they should tolerate you being a dick sometimes. We all are a dick sometimes with someone, more often with those who are close to us than to perfect strangers. Or not?

@kaia Considering how they impose their cloud storage everywhere in the OS and in their [bad word here] collaboration tools, even uninstalling is not a perfect solution. But hey, if life gives you lemons… 😁
