I have a old #imac. Thinking about putting #linux on it. Does anyone have a suggestion which distribution is the best to replace #macos? #elementaryos ? #linuxmint ?

@rhgrouls How old is it? My Late 2009 iMac can still decently keep up with virtually every Linux out there, but switching to PowerPC is a massive headache

@rhgrouls #elementaryos is often praised for its simplicity but I’d choose a more classical distro. To get the original vibe, you know. For personal productivity I have installed #linuxmint and #ubuntu on a few old Macs.

@bitzero @rhgrouls Manjaro is good but isn't really aimed at older hardware, also they have their own NIH syndrome tho thankfully not as bad as Ubuntu.

@rhgrouls well, that means it’s most likely either an early 2008 or an early 2009… which means these are also Core 2 Duos, but with slower clocks…your iMac is probably not going to run elementary OS or a GNOME desktop smoothly, although it might not be far off either… your easiest bet would be Debian, Linux Mint or Ubuntu Mate (both in fact indirectly based on Debian), where you can choose between various desktops that try to look like Windows XP or 7I’ve just played around with some of these and imho none of them are nearly as refined as what you’d get out of elementary OS or a GNOME system, but I find Ubuntu Mate does the job best – you can give it a try on UTM or Parallels if you want
