Data scientists should study Philosophy and Epistemology very hard to really understand the impacts of what they're doing

If the coronavirus outbreak will last for another few months, we might very well be watching at the end of the economy we know

Why masks are dumb? Simple, because at best they make others immune and not the wearer, so I'll always have the incentive to not wear one.If everybody else has one than I can avoid wearing one and be safe. This the same with vaccines, but with the huge difference that vaccines work firstly on myself, and only incidentally and eventually helping others. So let's focus on vaccines and drugs, these are the only way we can get out of this

This has to stop, China and Russia are conducting an asymmetrical war with the West, and this means we have to give asymmetrical answers.https://flip.it/gOaxw6

@veer66 nope, though I consider it europe, for most people only white Russia can be considered West. Moreover, they don't consider themselves West, and that's what matters the most

@khm weird, that many don't, but I mostly agree with you. This is clearly a power matter, not an economic one. Because nobody explained how, if the 'economic model' was utterly wrong, it was possible to maintain it for all these years. I bet that if you sack ALL management and mozilla gets in the hands of all those remaining they'd find ways to cope with the model and the people

This discussion about 'modernizing' Emacs (https://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/832311/03910e26a3f3e814) makes me think that Rich Hickey (https://youtu.be/MCZ3YgeEUPg) might have a point. If we're starting to suggest things like: "(Let's produce) short videos to match the perceived attention span of young users, ideally funny and sexy, maybe with a cat" then it becomes clear that the issue is not that Emacs is not 'modern', but something completely different: we're dumb.

The covid pandemic is contributing to generate other epidemics, such as measles: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/12/health/measles-deaths-soared-worldwide-last-year-as-vaccine-rates-stalled.htmlNow, if you think that covid with an R factor of 3-4 is sneaky and terrifying, wait for measles to come back roaring, with a very nice R factor around 18 (yes, 18, not a typo)

I perfectly understand and agree that regular Russians shouldn’t suffer consequences for the choices of a mafia controlled government, but if whatever their government (or someone else’s) does there are never consequences, how there would ever be change? In the end there are 140 millions Russians, if they really wanted change they can get it, so I guess some of the blame should be placed on them. It’s not easy to decide and I’m not saying this would be fair, but it’s real.

@cy it’s more a matter of willingness than being able to, but yes as I was saying it’s more a provocation, and I’m perfectly aware that’s most likely not the way to go, but still nation states are embedded in a system that eventually leads to wars, if the wars are not between nations anymore what do we need states for? What does it mean to be Russian? Or Ukrainian? Or Canadian? Etc.

And here we are: https://www.newsweek.com/russian-students-turn-traitor-teachers-who-speak-against-ukraine-war-1696747?amp=1This is definitely an issue, if actions don’t have consequences it’s a free for all.
