Mozilla is canning a quarter of their workforce and doubling down on deprioritizing browser development. Instead they're going to shift focus on selling shit. Remember this, next time someone tells you to donate.https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2020/08/11/changing-world-changing-mozilla/

@khm Great Ghu what a mass of doubletalk! And somehow this is all necessary to battle systemic racism?

@publius seems to me like a new CEO just CEOing as usual -- getting the obligatory COVID and racism mentions over with in the opening salvo, so you can ignore them while discussing important things like saving money and pivoting to services

@jb My guess is it won't at all. Dropbox is the only org who relies on it for income, and it doesn't cost much to maintain Yet Another LLVM Frontend.

@khm I like this:"We’re fortunate that Firefox and Mozilla retain a high degree of trust in the world. Trust and a feeling of authenticity feel unusual in tech today. At least they know what they've been spending all these years. Hopefully they find out it's a finite resource. They're running out of it fast.

@khmWhat do they even have to sell? Besides reskinned Mullvad. Are they going to charge for Pocket? Run a Matrix instance? XMPP? Email?I don't realistically see anything unique they could sell or any market they could compete in that isn't already oversaturated. And if they expect me to pay for proprietary software (or SaaS), good luck.

@khm @jb Pretty ignorant take. AWS makes heavy use of Rust for managing services. They even have Rust components open-sourced on GitHub. Cloudflare uses Rust. Microsoft uses Rust. Never mind all the other shops in the world using Rust for their products and services.

@tristan957 "uses Rust" is unimportant. The relevant question is whether aggregate deployment would cost more to maintain sans Mozilla than it would to rewrite the code to another language. Rust is core to Dropbox's main product and to recent Firefox. In most other major products it's just one carrot in a much larger stew. All the small shops don't contribute meaningfully to the language itself; they're negligible here.Shove your namecalling into your ass, incidentally.

@khm weird, that many don't, but I mostly agree with you. This is clearly a power matter, not an economic one. Because nobody explained how, if the 'economic model' was utterly wrong, it was possible to maintain it for all these years. I bet that if you sack ALL management and mozilla gets in the hands of all those remaining they'd find ways to cope with the model and the people

@khm Since their bad implementation of DoH (DNS over HTTPS), pushing all DNS traffic for everyone in the US to CloudFlare, I lost hope.

@dcid For me it was when they caved and decided to ship Cisco's video codecs while simultaneously blowing money on developing daala. The worst of both worlds!

@alan @khm Not "utterly wrong" financially, but ideologically. In an environment so thoroughly saturated with the worst kind of capitalism as software development & information services, even not-for-profit endeavours will tend to adopt the value systems they are supposed to be confronting.

@khm You make it sound like they have made a deliberate choice from doing the right thing to grabbing as much money as they could. It's apparently hard to pay a decent salary to 1,000 employees when you're products can be downloaded for free. Who knew?

@erwinrossen Mozilla hasn't done the right thing for many years now. Now, instead of just being a disappointment, they're hurting people who thought they had jobs and now do not.Yeah, it sucks the $300MM/year gravy train from Google is going away. They had years to prepare, completely failed to do so, and still the CEO gets paid millions. And they want people to donate?

@stefan @cyndn It's not worth differentiating. The CEO of Mozilla Corporation is the Chair of the Board of Directors at Mozilla Foundation. (The same person sits on the steering committee of Beijing Mozilla Online Ltd.)
