@Linux I can't wait to make the jump to Wayland. I just cannot do it quite yet because muffin, the window manager behind Cinnamon does not quite support it yet. Wayland is the modern replacement for Xorg.

Collectively-speaking, we as a society, are more interested in the modern form of the Roman spectacle, news and TV shows, than learning. Societies decline when they're unable to meet the basic needs of the people that make up them. We are witnessing this unfold in front of our very eyes.

@clive ChatGPT is really just one somewhat educated guess machine. The only thing it's really good for is the occasional help with a complex software configuration file. Even then, you to know enough about the software to know when the AI is wrong.

The warning is that while the fediverse may appear to be similar to #twitter, the similarities remain superficial If you've come here in the hopes of some algorithm to assist, you will be sorely disappointed. Furthermore, most participants in the #ActivityPub realm have chosen to be here precisely because they found attempts to be influenced or manipulated tiresome and annoying.Social media influencers will probably find more traction at Bluesky. The fediverse world is independent-minded and less likely to be swayed by an individual opinion, even regardless of celebrity status. We are more apt to question the influencer's point of view than to take it in faith.In short, the fediverse isn't a popularity contest. It's merely a platform for exchanging ideas and learning from other people.

@mikey I felt much the same way about hashtags at twitter. I felt that they fed some sort of nebulous algorithm that guessed based on the hashtags that I used what others I might be interested in and related advertising. It made a big mess of things. I love seeing no advertisements here in the #fediverse. This is the way the internet was intended to be: wide open.

@adhdeanasl It's probably for the better because, to be quite frank, #twitter made for a lousy revolutionary communication platform because it created a single point of failure, i.e. twitter. Using a decentralized platform as a revolutionary tool avoids the single point of failure and makes it more difficult for any one single entity to manufacture consent or change the narrative.

@lowqualityfacts Calculus only makes sense to me when used in a physics frame of reference. Thankfully my Calc prof was also a good teacher as well as researcher. When he showed me how calculus equations play out in physics simulation software, it started to make sense.
