       I vehemently despised hashtags when I was on the bird-place. That was mainly due to that platform presenting me with things it learned that I liked through basic text search, so hashtags were redundant. Now here I am nearly a year later without a machine guiding me, and hashtags have become extremely useful again. I think that's one of the biggest lessons anyone migrating from #twitter will need to learn here: use #hashtags and use them often. #mastodon #welcome

       @mikey I understand their value but I kind of hate how they distract from the content. I wish we could separately tag content or have it intelligently pick out keywords.

       @techsquidtv I agree, they become a bit overwhelming, especially when scattered throughout the post. I honestly prefer just adding them at the very end whenever possible.

       @mikey I felt much the same way about hashtags at twitter. I felt that they fed some sort of nebulous algorithm that guessed based on the hashtags that I used what others I might be interested in and related advertising. It made a big mess of things. I love seeing no advertisements here in the #fediverse. This is the way the internet was intended to be: wide open.

       @techsquidtv @mikey The Ice Cubes app just added a feature where it adds hashtags (either at the end or in place) from keywords in your post/reply. It is pretty new and it adds a lot of hashtags so I haven’t really used it yet because I err on the side of fewer tags, not more. I tend to find the 20 variations on one main topic a wee bit annoying, but that’s just me, I get it.        I've been thinking about some method of when someone uses a hashtag, splattering that content in their feed for a few hours or something. Similar to following hashtags, but temporary.
