@cypnk Very cool. Also terrifying.Raises serious questions about using PDF as a document format.I guess my big question is how many PDF viewers are defaulted to run this kind of code in a PDF? :oh_no_bubble: One would hope that most have this turned off by default?๐Ÿคจ

@strypeyYou can do this with 'exclusive lists' in Hometown (a Mastodon fork). I don't know if Mastodon proper allows it.

@strypey @SmartmanApps @moshidon Yeah. I have Exclusive Lists for "Brands" and "Celebs" -- basically people who wouldn't want to converse, anyway. Since they're not in my "Home" stream, it preserves the more conversational nature of that feed.I have a couple of other special interest lists.Far from perfect: Mastodon only displays 4 lists in the web interface (+ "Lists" to see the rest), and they're chosen *alphabetically*. ๐Ÿ™„ But it does work.

@stux It's weird that I can see you posting from this account, but I can't access mstdn.social. It's been a few hours like this.Something up with the server or networking?

@davidrevoyThey're all good, but give me different feelings.A: Self-righteous "message" - "a very special episode"B: Really feel empathy with this one. Bit sad.C: Funny. Kind of old. But leaves a bad taste. I guess there's a faint "incel" / "misogyny" vibe?D: My fav, I think. Appeals to my X-er cynicism about commerce directly.

@futurebirdI've been hearing some rumblings that suggest discontent in Windows-world. I think they might be pushing Copilot onto more people? Maybe they're nostalgic for the annoying-but-less-harmful Clippy..?

@futurebird I'd second the Terry Pratchett fans here. Also have read C.J. Cherryh's "Chanur" series several times, so I guess that counts. And of course, there's Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", which I've probably read a dozen times over the years.I've read all of those aloud, BTW. Very smooth prose. (Well, except for the Kif, but listening to me try made the kids laugh, so that was alright! ๐Ÿ˜…).

@foone We went from "documents retrieved off the web" to "software applications downloaded from questionably trustworthy sites on the internet with terrible security".

@futurebird @mikemccaffrey A dramatic telling, but I was definitely not sure until you mentioned the "sound barrier". ๐Ÿ˜… After that, we're getting into Leiji Matsumoto territory...

@futurebirdOne of my frustrations is that so much of our (affordable) tech is designed to be disposable.I want a smartphone that is built like one of those early 20th century pocketwatches, with durable, repairable components that can be repaired that way. There is no technical reason not to do this. It's purely a matter of marketing and culture.Open Hardware / Maker culture has the will, but not the mass to make it viable. Corporate culture has the mass but not the will.

What does it look like if I upload a short MP4 with no sound? Does Mastodon think it's a "GIF"? Will it loop..?It thinks GIFs are video and converts them to MP4. Hmmm.. ๐Ÿค” From the October 2025 Newsletter. A fly-around the "Glory to the Conquerors of Space" monument set. Similar to a shot in the episode now, but not identical. Not sure we ultimately did this set justice.

Yeah. Looks like it thinks it's a GIF and it loops. This is good to know.I can save the trouble converting stuff to animated GIFs, I guess.

@futurebird Yeah. I'm pretty comfortable keeping my own company most of the time, but even I do like to get out and be with people sometimes.I often like to be in a public place, but just for the "walla" and the feeling of being out. Not actually to talk to anyone. :raccoon_cool:

@futurebirdSeems to me they've barely even gone through the motions of making a case for this violence. Of course it's wrong. The whole thing is illegal. And yet we can't seem to make that matter enough to stop it.
