:: something has gone terribly wrong with the D train. It started after 59th street where the train goes express gaining speed as the stations of the upper west blur by and in a blink you’re at 125th st. — or that is how it works normally — but this time the train never stopped— we hit Harlem at 60mph and only kept accelerating— and then the Bronx stations came fast too fast to read the signs— for a bit everyone was just sitting quiet thinking this was some kind of normal detour. 1/

But when the train came out into daylight shuddering like a rocket ship? that is when we all began to scream. We pulled on the emergency brakes— a tall man with powerful arms managed to pry the door between the next car open a crack but that only added the noise of the rushing air to our cries of terror— some poor teacher had been marking exams and the filled the car papers— outside the Bronx was a blur of green and brick buildings and the train was only going faster. 2/

Someone said we should duck and cover— but I couldn’t look away I wanted to see where we were going. As the speed increased the rattle of the wheels on the tracks grew more violent beneath us. Now and then we’d catch a little air- This was only more ominous since most of the buildings were below us now. It was getting harder to move around the train the acceleration had us pinned place. With a final violent shudder that cracked every window we broke the sound barrier. 3/

@futurebird I used to ride the D to the Bronx daily, and sometimes after all the stops in lower Manhattan, this is exactly how it felt. Thanks for the story!!
