This is now my third, hopefully last, new instance on the fedi - so new #intro I suppose. I'm Steve, a gay man living/working in Chicago USA with my queer family. I'm a former biker, Queer Nation member, and HIV activist. In my past life, I worked in #theater as a stage manager, master electrician, and technical director. But the past ~20 yrs, I've worked in technology as network architect and engineer and now as a #cybersecurity tech leader - and am known as the grumpy guy at conferences who calls out dissembling acronyms and tech magic BS.I have cats - I regular post picts of. I have sat of the BoD of various gay/queer organizations, including theaters, Leather and BDSM clubs.I regularly volunteer for various organizations fighting for bodily autonomy and freedom for women, trans, and other, queer folk. So terf rhetoric will not be tolerated.

So I been traveling the past week and just got home and turned on the news. Whereon I encountered a woman who had an unfortunate collision with a tube of mascara screaming at me about how Charlie Kirk’s murder was the greatest threat to Free Speech this country has seen. I wonder where she has been for the past many months or years while trans kids were legally silenced by state laws, and people simply protesting the actions of Israel are have degrees and jobs striped from them, while uniformed agents of the State arrest and detain others? I then changed the channel to see a besuited ‘liberal’ go on about how “political violence has no place in America.” Again, I wondered where he has been as the State has violently detained or deported people for speaking Spanish or merely appearing at a court hearing to review their legal visa? I wonder if he’s even aware of the political violence being done to minority communities around the country by masked thugs empowered by the government? Of course, it was then I realized, he and others, only meant non-sanctioned political violence. Sanctioned political violence has a long history in America, Violence by the State (which is always political) against Black and brown people, against indigenous people, against queer people is as American as apple pie. Let us not hide in euphemisms: Charlie Kirk was a hate monger: he thrived on engendering hatred in others towards the most marginalized citizens. He milked, cleaned and sold outrage and animus, and made a substantial living doing so. Kirk’s murder was almost certainly political, but for a man who trafficked in the politics of hatred, this only seems apt. While I do not celebrate the murder of anyone, I can only smile, and see the irony in those decrying political violence against a man who regularly called for it.

As we enter an even darker timeline, I mentioned to my partner today how disturbed I am about the lack of critical art and media. Back in the 80s-90’s I remember going to plays, art shows, and film screenings that were all commenting on the current cultural condition. Even Hollywood movies and musicians attempted to address the culture we were living through. From the repressive 50-60’s we can even see films and theater trying to critique McCarthyism and the what the American experience was.We are living in days of ascending fascism, and I have seen little in response by filmmakers, playwrights, and artists. Certainly, this is partially due to the rising costs of producing art and media in our times, but it’s also reflective of the need to subsume art to profitability, and the consolidation of media ownership, resulting in a flattening of culture. Along with this comes the introduction of AI slop, which simply recycles ideas and strip humanity and imagination from storytelling and craft. More and more, I feel like we are slipping into - or perhaps mired in - a modern Dark Age, where knowledge, art, and expression are repressed by both the “markets” and the State. I’m not sure what to do about any of this; however, I believe people will always matter more than property and that our experiences reflected in art eventually find a way to escape even the most repressive times. Perhaps, it too soon to expect artistic reflection? But if not now when?

@cyb3rm0shp1t Years ago, I watched friends die because doctors thought they were icky and wouldn’t listen to them. The medical establishment has always been about supporting cis, heterosexual male bodies first and foremost. I am sorry you had to go through this as well. :hug_purple:

I have some concerns around E and personal mh issues. So, I trying to get an emotional timeline for hrt. There’s a lot of positive promise here for me, but also some risk. How long were you on estradiol before you noticed emotional changes or mental affects? I’ll throw a poll in just because, but any insights would be appreciated(oh, feel free to boot)

In the last ~60 days I’ve seen:trans women are all secret Nazis / raciststrans women are prone to violencetrans women hate trans masc folkstrans women believe T causes masc folks to be violent (a terf talking point)trans women control the fedi, if not the Internettrans women control all irl queer spacesAll of these are complete bollocks, and are thrown around to create an inversion of hierarchy. To try to compare trans women to cis men and terfs who wield systemic and economic power over us. All of these statements are designed are interrogate our womanhood or femininity against some cis ideal. In this, they are all transmisogynistic at their core. Yes, there are many trans women who believe that they should not center or include men in their lives or communities. This is not a trans feminist position, but a feminist position going back 50+ years. Does this, at times, hurt men’s feelings? Yes. But hurt feels are not misandry. Men wield cultural, economic, and systemic power over women - if you doubt this just look at the way women’s bodies are controlled legally and culturally through propaganda and violence. We live in a system of patriarchal misogyny, where women are always viewed as lesser than men, and any attempt to change that are met with political and personal backlash to reestablish and strengthen patriarchal norms. There is no such system controlling men’s bodies or lives, other than the dualism established and promulgated by misogyny. Thus, misandry is a farce and an attempt to deny the effects of misogyny by using a both sides argument. …and just to be clear, I, and pretty much every transitioning trans woman I know, would gladly siphon off all excess T they have and give it to trans masc people if they could.
