@cyb3rm0shp1t @Steve I should add some requirement that in order to join xnfm you must submit proof of completing an initiation ritual. this is an idea I've had for a long time and never tried actually doing but I'm gonna have to give this more thought because it would be very aura

@nyx @Steve @cyb3rm0shp1t i always wanted to do more back in the w.l heyday to weed out bots and stick to the theme but what minimal barriers i had to put up already had people bouncing 😔 but even an open-ended initiation ritual would be pretty cool ngl, especially if you're more concerned with attracting people dedicated enough, at minimum, to lie about doing somethingin retrospect, less people but more dedicated to the bit would have been better for w.l probably lol

@anna @Steve @cyb3rm0shp1t my strategy has always been to prioritize quality over quantity. having a bunch of users sign up immediately because there's a migration wave is a good way to ensure that the energy fizzles out quickly, and then most of the people who join in those conditions will probably leave since they probably only showed up because other people were there. I've always been of the mind that in order to use xnfm you need to share in the same sort of goal as me to explore the possibilities of actually autonomous alternative spaces on the internet with more potential to be interesting. but that requires being willing to be an early adopted and stick with it over the long term even when it may not be very active, especially early on. if a site builds that dedicated foundation and moves slowly, it'll gain more momentum over time while countless other sites or instances that started off with way more hype and user counts have fallen. this is why xnfm will outlive all of fedi

@nyx @Steve @cyb3rm0shp1t absolutely, in the end what got me on w.l is that it turns out there IS a limit to the amount of abuse i will accept from terminally online freaks and that despite the fiction of running my own server, there was a lot more than i excpected was possible coming from without. and running a mastodon that doesn't run stock is too much fucking work to keep up when you're being called slurs by a bunch of woke crusaders for the effort
