@leo I used to have one but stopped using it very quickly: the 'straw' got too hot - though more expensive ones may not have that problem. It's a long time since I drank it but I remember that I really liked the gaucho mate.

@grammargirl It's a tough one, since I see the appeal of both.Still, I mostly choose to listen to X because Y made it, so I don't really do subject searches but follow creators where they choose to go.As for re-listening to things, my brain is better at storing catchy titles than fact-led ones. So, if I saw, for instance, the title, 'Not a Susan Hill to die on?', I'd know if I wanted to listen to it again, while 'The woman in black; timeless or outdated?' might not ring a bell.

@grammargirl That is going well. Still, they're only at the B stage. By the time they reach the S, things will have improved considerably, I'm sure - so let's not be too negative, until we've heard version Santos doing its thing.

@grammargirl Yes, that was very interesting. I would like to read more about that.

@budgibson @grammargirl Bertrand Russell stated that language not only serves to express thought but to make possible thoughts which could not exist without it.Since we also know that in some languages there are words (for things) that have no equivalent in other languages, that would mean that those people (up to a point) think differently too.On a less technical level, learning another language means getting exposed at least somewhat to another culture, which can change you.

@grammargirl @budgibson I know. I'm a (lapsed) linguist myself - though I haven't really kept up with developments in the field for a long time.I don't think I ever believed Russell was totally correct on this (and I doubt he did) but there is a layer of truth there.Language is, if not the engine of thought, at the very least fuel - and we need languages for certain types of thought, as rungs on ladders of meaning (with my apologies to Wittgenstein.)

@grammargirl The thing is: I am properly forgetful, so it happened a handful of times that I ended up with two copies of the same book: one ordered when it was in the shop and the other preordered so long before it came out that I had forgotten about preordering it.So, I stopped preordering too far ahead.

@grammargirl I'm too lazy to go diving into comparative linguistics rabbit holes now but two things struck me.- First, that in French you have the 'de' form in some of the places 'of' is used in English.- Second, in the Czech language any number of things higher than four gets the genitive (so, it's four piva but five piv.)No idea if these things are in any way related; probably not directly, but maybe there is a, now obsolete, case-related cause behind the current use of 'of'?

@grammargirl Ah yes.One time when that happened, I went back to the shop and put something else in the cart as well, and left again. For the next month or so, every time they contacted me, I put yet another thing in the cart - until I got bored of fucking with them and just blocked them.

@lauren Trump; he'll die soon enough. (Well, 'enough' is debatable; let's call it 'most likely to die soon'.)

@grammargirlTricky but I went with spellcheck. The longer you look at it, the more rabbit holes you can see to get lost in but I'd say the word has by now found a place in our shared vocabulary and it can join the other composite nouns & verbs we write as one word (like proofread).

@stux Guns aren't wrong.I'm with the NRA on that one: guns don't kill people.Mind you, their conclusion is mental. It's precisely because it is people who kill people that you should never allow them near a gun.

@stux I would never entrust people with guns, because you can't trust people. To venture into the absurd: I wouldn't mind guns owning guns; they wouldn't fire them, after all.

@grammargirl In my teens I tried a few times to read while I rode my bicycle to school - which was not a great success.A more practical mind than mine would, after one or two attempts, have gone on to invent the audiobook. The glaring absence of millions of Euros in my saving account is proof of the fact that I am not, in fact, in possession of such a thing as a practical mind.

@grammargirl Ouch. That is much much worse. At least I was on a dedicated bicycle lane, with a hedge between the provincial road and that lane.(At that very early hour I had the lane mostly to myself; the only damage I could do was to my old bike, the book and myself.)

@grammargirl Right, so you're essentially saying to the other people in the room: 'You lot are bad and acidic, have some toast'.

I just made this: rose petal pink dried peppercorn salt - which took all of three or four minutes, so I may need to dream up more fun kitchen-y tasks.- Heat rose petals in a dry pan, to release the flavours, but watch they don't burn.- Put peppercorns & petals, with sea salt, in a spice grinder.- Grind.Don't worry about amounts. Start with the petals & pepper, and a bit of salt, and keep adding salt till you're happy with the colour & taste of the mix.#FlavouredSalt#Salt#Homemade

@grammargirl Not quite the same thing but we passed this town two weeks ago in our way to Prague.(I found the photo on the internet; I was too slow to take a pic myself.)
