I'm revisiting the word "toast" this morning and was reminded of one of my favorite tidbits:Toasting someone with a drink comes from the ancient practice of putting a piece of toast in bad wine to reduce the acidity.

@schwa Interesting. I've never heard "toast" used to describe phone pop-up notifications, and I didn't find it on the first 10 pages of Urban Dictionary (after which I stopped reading because I had learned things I now wish I did not know ... ugh). I'll keep an eye out for it.

@Saposcat Good question!The OED has an older meaning for the verb "roast" as burning someone alive, so I would guess that roasting someone as a very mild form of torment comes from that, but I can see how it would also benefit from the resonance with "toast."

@grammargirl I... I do not believe this! in "ancient" times, most people drank their wine in a watered state, and acidity would not have been a big problem. and, um, what on earth would toast do??

@acm_redfox I was shocked when I heard this too. I have no idea how the chemistry works, but it is the widely accepted story on the origin of the word.

@grammargirl I poked around some more and got the notion that (a) the bread might be spiced, improving the flavor, or (b) that it might trap sediment. I just... wow. we forget, I think, how bad the everyday wines of earlier ages probably were! 😝
