@switchingsocial @purism The problem is you put all your eggs in one basket. If they get hacked *all* your data is exposed. This also means they are a far larger target.

This huge add on problem in Firefox got me thinking about alternatives. I shouldn’t be relying on just one browser, so I looked into others. So far I got:- Brave- Vivaldi- WaterfoxWhat are your thoughts on these and do you have any other recommendations? Or just any thoughts about browsers!

@gentoorebel Why do you want to be far away from Mozilla?

@gentoorebel True. There have been a ton of things Mozilla has done for the past few years that they shouldn’t have, but in my opinion they still are important and trustworthy.

@gentoorebel We will have to agree to disagree, but this was informative. You raise a great point. Who knows what happens next year? It’s not just the internet, it’s everything. Events are highly unpredictable and this has remained true throughout history and will continue to be. Let’s hope it’s positive.

@sergiotarxz @cassidyjames Not Cassidy James but when you go to the website you can buy it but you can just change the amount in the custom payment box to 0 if you do not want to pay.

@kev The dark mode on the site fits better with the blue accent present as well. Also, dark themes are (almost) always easier on the eyes.

@ataraxia937I use Bitwarden, so theoretically someone could get access to the database, but I'm fine with it since I trust the encryption. I have a strong master password after all. My keepass has ultra important passwords, though, so I would change those just to be safe.

@kelbotFor me, if is somewhat the opposite. I don't take Mastodon for writing long enough to warrant usage of a physical keyboard. When I'm at a physical keyboard, I want to write much more. However, I feel that is better saved for a blog post. On mobile, I am naturally more concise, which has its pros and cons. need to start experimenting with fediversing on a desktop.

For Day 4 of #100DaysToOffload, I explored why I even have a site, and write at all. I’ll adapt it to an “About this Site” page soon™Read here:https://jacobneplokh.com/what-is-this-site-for

@mike I agree pretty much everything stated. Federation is essential for an open platform, as no one entity can control it like you said. Also, another important point (which you did briefly mention) is the threat of the government blocking apps in general. If an app does pose a security risk, Apple and Google should make the choice, not the government.Overall a bad situation, one can hope it can push just a little more to the Fediverse and related concepts/platforms
