@post @davidrevoy It already exists: GNU MediaGoblin. It supports images, video, audio and even 3D models. The main devs helped create #ActivityPub, so the development process practically stopped in 2016, but they started pushing out new updates since 2020.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaGoblin

@post @davidrevoy At least in this article they say that MediaGoblin implements ActivityPub, along with Mastodon and Nextcloud: https://www.linux-magazin.de/news/activitypub-neuer-standard-fuer-dezentrale-netzwerke/ (German)

@climagic The reverse is also not always true. Prime example: #Microsoft #Windows. You already paid a considerable amount for the licence, but they still decide to mine your data, install bloat-ware and show ads everywhere. Compare that to Linux, which is literally free with no ads or tracking included. The #Fediverse isn't any different, as there is no corporate incentive to do those things.

@newt @climagic Are all resources in posts (images, videos, audio) cached on your local server? Even from other ActivityPub services? Whichever case it might be, at least once you click on an embedded video (e.g. YouTube) your IP is sent to the foreign service. Sure, you could always use a VPN, but most people won’t, so I’m disregarding that here.

@killyourfm I find the transition between the lava inside the hell hounds mouth and the lemon frosting very interesting. The perfect combination of hell and taste 🤤

@boilingsteam That does seem a little concerning, but if they implement their screening well and warn the user that it’s a binary release (part of the security score) then I don’t see why not. 😄I think it’s all in all a very good proposal and will help convince developers to switch to Linux long-term. Funding is always a difficult issue with OSS, so adding an easy way to donate to developers will help underfunded projects tremendously.

@FediFollows WhatsApp actually uses XMPP, although a locked down proprietary version of it. If the idea of a federated messenger sounds interesting, there’s also #Matrix (https://matrix.org), which is intended to be a more secure XMPP alternative. A popular client is #Element (https://element.io).

Perhaps it’s just because of my #C experience, but I actually find #Rust easier to use than #Python. I know, that’s crazy! However, I find it nudges you to write good maintainable code, instead sloppily scripting something in 5 minutes. You also don’t have to worry about performance. In some cases, Rust is even faster than C as the compiler has a better understanding of your code (e.g. ownership & lifetimes), allowing it to do more optimisation tricks.

Once you learn the basics (the free Rust book is great), it just becomes natural. The compiler errors are also the most descriptive and helpful that I have ever seen. They even suggest how to solve the problem, giving inexperienced programmers a helping hand. Python only wins in the support department (more libraries and users) but that might change in the not so distant future 😉

@boilingsteam I guess the decision was largely made due to Microsoft’s rich history in anti-competitive behaviour. In the gaming space Minecraft comes to mind, which is only available on their store, with a Microsoft account. The Bedrock version is also Windows-only, even though it was ported to all mobile and console platforms and the server software works on Linux. So if you’re using Mac or Linux (direct competitors) you relegated to Java only, even online.

@boilingsteam Did the Steam Deck feel “legitimate” compared to other consoles? Most of the people there probably knew Steam already, but what does the general public think about a handheld Linux PC from the West? Are people generally interested or dismissive?

@boilingsteam Hopefully, this will bring some admins to question their dependence on Microsoft. Microsoft does not adhere to GDPR and is trying to force everyone to use their cloud services, not just Edge.https://bigbrotherawards.de/en/2023/microsoft

@boilingsteam Software development in general is getting worse, to be honest. Then again, The Elder Scrolls Morrowind rebooted your XBOX as a "memory management" feature (and disguised it as a very long loading screen). The developers just couldn't be bothered to free unused memory and let the OS do it for them.

@shibayashi We definitely need more regulation in the software development industry, just like more traditional engineering fields. The focus is too often only on "productivity", i.e. how quickly can one code something, rather than the quality of that code.As for choosing better programming languages, #Rust is a great example of a modern programming language that tries to be as secure and efficient as possible, while also reducing complexity for the programmer.

@mtomczak @shibayashi I see your point, but I would argue that certification with Rust would probably be easier, as it has more guarantees than C/C++. Even inexperienced (or tired!) programmers produce memory safe code in Rust, which is definitely not the case in C/C++. Certification bodies may even require companies to use programming languages and libraries with security and efficiency guarantees, as they do now with static analysis, adequate testing, etc.

@mtomczak @shibayashi More "red tape" doesn't necessarily mean less innovation. It could even create a more level playing field and allow everyone to "play by the same rules", so to say.

@TopKnot @AnarchoNinaWrites ChatGPT and similar "AI" are just "stochastic parrots". It is very good in simulating natural language, as it knows what words should follow other words in a specific context. However, it has no concept of meaning or correctness. The generated "facts" are statistically likely, but not necessarily true. Therefore, it shouldn't be seen as a search engine or even a calculator, because that's not what it does. It simulates language, nothing more, nothing less.

@PCMag I’m sceptical that this new social media platform will be any less problematic or more privacy friendly than Meta’s other products.

@tschaefer @tagesschau Die Sanierung kann dauern, wie man es bei Stuttgart 21 sehen kann. Dies ist das Ergebnis von versäumter Investitionen der letzten 30 Jahren.
