@climagic yeah. Free beta testers are quite a product these days.

@climagic The reverse is also not always true. Prime example: #Microsoft #Windows. You already paid a considerable amount for the licence, but they still decide to mine your data, install bloat-ware and show ads everywhere. Compare that to Linux, which is literally free with no ads or tracking included. The #Fediverse isn't any different, as there is no corporate incentive to do those things.

@GlowingLantern @climagic the fedi is data mined to shit. AP isn’t exactly a privacy-first protocol.

@newt @climagic But you choose what you post publicly. The only personal information other instances get is your IP as far as I know. Everything else stays on your instance. If your instance doesn’t mine your data, no other instance can, except for what you choose to make public. That’s the difference – consent.

@GlowingLantern @climagic no, this isn’t true. The only way for other instances to get your IP is if your admin is a dumbass. Otherwise, only your posts federate. But this is pretty much the same info as Twitter has on you. IP can be hidden, after all.

@newt @climagic Are all resources in posts (images, videos, audio) cached on your local server? Even from other ActivityPub services? Whichever case it might be, at least once you click on an embedded video (e.g. YouTube) your IP is sent to the foreign service. Sure, you could always use a VPN, but most people won’t, so I’m disregarding that here.
