A retronym is a word that describes something that used to be the only kind of something, like acoustic guitar and postal mail (or snail mail). Here's a new one to me: pork bacon!#Language #EnglishLanguage #retronym

@grammargirl Turkey bacon has been around for a while, but I guess there's enough other bacons that we can't default to "if it doesn't have a modifier, it's piggie".

@grammargirl In Tunica, the language I study, a few words whose domains have been extended, akin to your bacon example, have developed retronyms that use a suffix meaning “true”. So, for example, the word that once referred just to buffalo is now applied to all bovines. To specify "buffalo" specifically, you'd talk about a "true bovine”.

@grammargirl @jzitt @stephenjbell This is not a retronym, but The Netherlands, quite a while ago, had a government formation period that was called “digital” just because it was different from usual: it was not “analog(ous)” to the ones we were used to.

@kate Interesting question! Since food was originally "organic" (which I'm defining as grown without industrial chemicals and not the other meanings), you could say that "organic" is a retronym on a food label. But I'm not sure people think about it the same way as the other retronyms. What I mean is that although it may technically be a retronym, I don't think people think of non-organic food as the newer version the way they do with other things like e-bikes and electric guitars.

@grammargirl yes! That’s what I was musing on too: having never met “retronym” before I found it a helpful way to think about something we’ve forgotten was the original state, that now seems like the novelty form.

@grammargirl @jzitt @stephenjbell Now I sort of want to see ‘acoustic’ take off as an antonym to ‘e-’. So the opposite of e-mail would be acoustic mail, and the opposite of e-vite would be acoustic vite.
