@grammargirl Yeah, OK, but as a teaching point, I think I'm sticking with "they". It's pithier, despite the grammatical sleight of hand. BTW, the AP style book now says data can be both singular and plural, although not in a single context.

@grammargirl Mixed fonts are a dead giveaway, there are lots of fonts that look similar, but aren't the same.As an academic, you get to know your students' styles. Words and phrases that seem out of place are always a red flag.

@grammargirl in your discussion of bully, you didn't mention bully pulpit, a phrase of surprisingly recent origin. According to etymology online, it was coined by Teddy Roosevelt but really came into its own in the 1980s

@grammargirl Downgrading posts with external links is also shortsighted. Hyperlinks give users the ability to dig deeper. They are the secret sauce of the internet.

Laboratory Developed Tests are the life blood innovation in medical diagnostics. These are not products old as devices, they are the work of professionals working in pathology labs. This power grab by the FDA will stifle innovation and limit testing access for people with rare diseases https://www.wsj.com/articles/robert-califf-fda-regulatory-power-lab-tests-2310eaeb

Watching Harvard's reputation - one of world's most prestigious brands - torn down in real-time is something to behold. Almost no one understands in a connected world letting small/extremist groups run amok can do incalculable damage. Leadership is oblivious (in corp America too)-- @adamsinger on X

@Bucket No assumptions. The rise of the administrative university has been a disaster. This is just the most recent blow.

@grammargirl yes, although for those of us who use technical language, it still comes up with comic substitutions frequently

@grammargirl Nice episode. Interestingly, Halloween itself seems to be a collision between pagan and Christian traditions. While it's widely thought to be a pagan frestival, the name derives from All Hallow Even, the night before All Saints Day which has been November 1st since Pope Gregory III in the 700s AD. Coincidentally, it may also have been a pagan new years celebration https://www.britannica.com/topic/All-Saints-Day

@grammargirl @bodhipaksa The enshitification of everything on the Internet is real and reflects deep underlying economics. AI won't be immune. Professional writers will need to guard against surreptitious product placement deals, subtle censorship and other BS https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/

@grammargirl @bodhipaksa why did I think it should say "beer" and instead the AI said "Budweiser", and how come it only finds nice things to say about China, and it's always inserting subtle jabs on our current political leadership?

@grammargirl @KOKEdit It's relatively easy to make predictions based on a static past. It's much harder to do so in a dynamic environment with adversarial actors. Zillow has a great real estate pricing model, but when they tried to actually buy and sell real estate themselves, they nearly went bankrupt because people found ways to manipulate their algorithm. There are lots of players who want to manipulate content for their own, not necessarily honorable, ends

Nice vision from Ilya Sutskever, a man in the news, but the challenge is knowing the goals of the AI:- best medical outcome for the patient- acceptable outcome with the lowest out of pocket costs - maximal profit for the health care system- lowest cost to the insurer- ...With all the training data hidden behind HIPAA, how will we know?

@grammargirl I had to google it. LLMs May never make fetch happen, but TikTok could and probably does so routinely.P.S. Actually, I DuckDuckGo'd it. If anyone wanted to challenge their trademark, Google has lost control of the term. To google is now a generic verb, to do an Internet search. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/24/smarter-living/how-a-brand-name-becomes-generic.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

@grammargirl and, of course, another English variant of the French maison is manor, which very much carries the association with wealth and upper class status as in "to the manor born"
