I'm crashing out right now, but I'll be OK. I've got a good support network of caring friends and family, enough financial privilege that I can afford housing and healthcare, and I live in a city and state that still have a few protections left for folks like us.But I'm privileged that way... not all trans folks are, not by a long shot. Let someone know (respectfully and with their consent!) how much you care for them, that the world is better with them in it.

The more serious answer is that this effectively reduces to a "debate me, bro" stance. I emphatically and as a hopefully rational actor do not take the time to understand all the bad ideas that I am exposed to. That is a glorious waste of the time I could be using to come up with good ideas, and also a categorical misunderstanding of the burden of proof.That's not to say I won't ever do the work to understand opposition, as I said, I'm anything but intellectually lazy.(1/3)

It's more that you can't, as the AI boosters have done (and that very much so includes Evan as a soft booster), put out extraordinary claim after extraordinary claim, do *none* of the work to back that up with equally extraordinary evidence, then complain to the ref that opponents of AI haven't done their work.(2/3)

It's even more the case that understanding bad ideas isn't my job when those ideas are rooted in hate and eliminationism. In the most extreme case, I do not need to deeply understand the finer points of Nazi philosophy and theology to rightly conclude that Nazis are bad.With AI, questions like "is this LLM alive and intelligent" are inherently rooted in eugenics. It is not my job to be fluent in eugenicist euphemisms before I criticize eugenicist movements.(3/3)

Propaganda.We have hard evidence that LLMs influence people towards fascist causes, even with only light usage. If you ask a propaganda machine to copyedit your work, your work *becomes* propaganda. This is one of the many troubles of trying to argue whether or not AI "works." You're inevitably going to get into questions of works for whom, how well, at what tasks, and how you can measure that. All the while missing that you've opened a massive gaping hole in your cognition and invited fascists in for tea with an aperitif of your fucking neural structure.

I've made the mistake of trying to talk about AI "working" in the past, and arguing on that basis. It was indeed a mistake on my part, one whose failure modes become more and more clear as AI vendors added more and more bells and whistles to make the whole magic trick seem to work. How many "r"s are there in strawberry? Sure, they can add an escape hatch to detect that question!But none of that is the point. Adding more magic doesn't fix the problems with AI.

People keep talking about boycotting AI or abstaining from it, like boycotts or abstinence have ever affected meaningful systematic change. We are so completely and wholly unprepared for this desperate moment, it's astounding.This is not a problem that will be solved by asking capitalists to please be slightly less fascist or antagonistic to labor.
