       now y'all can finally see what I look like (hope no one is too scare) 😆 I am sitting on the stairs of my house on two pillows (as it was only reasonable looking background) with the phone at arms length or the front camera "adds weight"My hair is probably too long and untidy but at my age I'm glad to still have it 😆 took *ages* to get a OK one and had to avoid falling down the stairs..comments/boosts OK (I doubt anyone is going to want to flirt with this "old uncle")

       @aral @precariousmind and that is surely directly a sign of climate change..I haven't used a Fairphone as its a device sold at a premium with fewer features than other devices at same price point and I keep mobile phones until the hardware fails or the OS is too insecure, but the Chinese manufacturers are also barking at their heels - I bought a number of Blackview devices for staff at work (as they are ruggedised) and even one for myself, and they are already selling DIY screen and digitiser repair kits widely available from online sellers - something I've not seen with other brands..

If a car race had that many drivers getting hurt/killed there would be a massive shitstorm (indeed, there are a lot more safety regulations required for #motorsport compared to 20-30 years ago)I've got no issue with folk keeping #horses as pets and #riding them at normal speeds (or even a bit faster if the horse wants to and its in a suitably safe area), but #horseracing increasingly looks like it belongs in dustbin of history alongside bear-baiting and poor-quality zoos and menageries..https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd709jel19xo

       @stux @dzwiedziu in UK all younger drivers are nudged to getting a spybox on their cars (GNSS receiver +LTE modem link, connected to CAN-BUS) by the insurance companies, without it their insurance is unaffordable for 1-2 years. This data is harvested by the insurers and used to set premiums for young drivers as a whole.I got my licence late in life, and got handed this "First Car" magazine aimed at teens when I passed my driving test (the examiner was a bit embarrassed but said he had to hand them to everyone who passed) and it was a mix of articles from YouTubers/rappers and adverts for these "black box" insurance policies..

       @RoyHorace @mxchara @rysiek I think its George Takei's social media team rather than him directly, but one thing I've noticed since 2017 is whilst I was initially one of the oldest on my Fedi group, now there are *many* folk on Fedi easily old enough to be my parents (and I'm 54!) and a lot who aren't from tech backgrounds, which shows the network has become accessible and usable for older people..

       @neil I can still remember programming in a mix of BASIC and Assembler (for a fruit machine simulation game) and splitting bytes into 8 1-bit status flags to save memory..

       @stux here they normally only use the small ones (for the exact reason that otherwise a cat or other non-target species can get in, there's a lot of hedgehogs and badgers in the area and those are considered OK to be out in the park)

       Whilst (as many have said) I fully expect some #teenagers to be able to bypass any social media ban, unless attitudes in high schools and youth peer groups change drastically, there's a risk the tech-smart kid who helps others bypass controls is *still* bullied for being a "nerd" and then thrown under the bus to authorities when everyone gets caught because other kids are careless..Maybe these attitudes might change, I don't have teenage kids of my own nor know any younger teenagers, but if I go by how young adults have behaved in this region for last 20 years that would be whats more likely to happen (and if anything attitudes and clique behaviour is *worse* than I was a teen myself in 1980s)

       @ariadne @noisytoot @zwol I use a *lot* of hashtags, but curiously only my post about an old radio transmitter being closed down got snagged by these bots, none of my toots about cars, transport, crime reports from UK - which makes me /more/ suspicious - is the setup *really* following every hashtag (which might not even work as there seem to be some bizzare ones being used), or is it quietly being curated in a subtle attempt to introduce algorithms to the Fedi?

       @stux although I'm not going to travel to Trumpland, every time I see a blurred out building on Google near me I've been tempted to drive up there and check it out to investigate exactly what folk want to hide and why..
