@lanodan ZMODEM was a neato file transfer protocol, usage peaked in the bbs days on the fidonet. It could do windowed streaming like tcp, its proto overhead could be crazy low with 1024 byte packet size. It adjusted packet size based on error rate. Chuck was a smart guy. Im thinking of adapting it for a mp/m machine to Linux box "file server"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZMODEM?wprov=sfla1 not sure if it will fit in z80. 32 bit ints are very cumbersome (quad precision).

$40/board, it's a lot. 270 goes in the fascists pocket ("tarriff"). Parts costs, everything-costs, high. Also it's just a shit-ton of money to pay out. And it is possible (though unlikely) I screwed something up in some way. Unlikely, it's a revision of a board I've made already, and it's KiCad, and JLCPCB has great tools, but still, it's a kilobuck.The last JLCPCB package was tossed over a neighbor's fence, too. Our lovely neighbor brought it to me. Yet another opp for disaster. I'm making 25 machines, gonna sell the for cost + 10% or something, I hope to get it all back....

@ai6yr I usually make 5 boards, their minimum. So if some part is out of stock, I leave it off, buy from Digikey etc, and hand solder at home.This time with 25 boards, I did the whole parts inventory thing. Holy crap it's fairly complicated; a web form driven marketplace, persona industries, leftover sales, consignments, cash accounts, global market ordering... it's crazy complex. Took me a week to puzzle that shit out alone.One connector had three more weeks to wait, it got extended once, so I punted and left it off. I'll do that at home.And customer service is amazing. Harsh in that chinese way (customer is WRONG! lol) (but I was wrong!), like your mother scolding you, but lovingly. But very helpful and it's all so polite you end up falling into super politeness everywhere all the time, such a refreshing change from shit US service.

I found Phil Karns (ka9q) cp/m code for NOS, his tcp/ip stack and clients (in sn all in one program). It has been on a well lnown retro site for some time, but not findsble via web search somehow, and its not just me not searching well. Which is a separate story. Its written in C, eith the Aztec compiler (very nice tool). It sll compiles. It has as serious hardware integration with the Zilog SIO and Timer in a Xerox 820 that would need adaptation, but thats acreaons le project. Without the actual SIO chip there would be no HDLC and attendant functions but in 2026, no loss. Doesnt compile under MP/M -- not enough memory. NOS is pushing things. Its clean snd readable code. The Little Garden ISP ran on the DOS version of NOS, we pushed it hard, it had few problems. As a router, with four modems, we hung four customers each full /24 subnet, on one low end single floppy DOS box feeding w router to the net. We called it "nail up" as opposed to dial up; stsy connected round the clock.Im not gonna pursue it at this time, ive got other things to do first. If someone here had the skills, and would bring it up, id provide them with a free fZ80 machine in exchange.... The partially prepped software bundle will be downloadable tomorrow. With compiler. Dev on CP/M is rough, you should know thet before you start.... MP/M is almost a joy. But since the task is narrow the device driver -- which will be firmware in thr Teensy 4.1 therefore gcc -- could be tested in an easy standalone program under MP/M which would be kinda fun and not gruelling at all. I'd help with that.

Google may now be a horror, but Street View all over the world, and what Google Earth had done (and is now all gone) was a wonder. The least dense street view visuals seem to be african continent, but still, what's there is amazing. I've not grown tired of it since new.Gone, the open maps API. Gone, the crowd-sourced construction of 3D buildings. Gone, the weird maps stuff that had me a bit of a fan, and pushed me to find valid street addresses that were not claimed or occupied by anyone, so I could build stuff on the API. (Hint: Thermal CA).Enjoy while it still exists.

@gmc OMFG how did i forget Usenet! I know how, back whenever you needed uucp or internet and i didnt have those things then, but i did have a usenet feed to home in 1998, thrn its kinda got lost...But yeah command line readers for the mostly chat snd support and such is just great. Why is no one talking about usenet? We fkn need to. Its loosely decentralizable, i would have to go rtfm. Maybe you have already.Theres the alt. heirarchy too. Oh hells yes lets talk about this!!! Revive and adapt to new circumstances. Our tech is so much better now! Dammit im gonna seriously consider this.

@gmc I plan on going through the state of the art and get a handle on how it works. I never really paid attention.To me though the store and forward brings many advantages, though I understand for frequent or live stuff it probably brings in a lot of overhead and disk thrash.Oh $DIETY please let's keep it written in C.

I'm going through the Three Little Bears, and OpenBSD seems Just Right.Running now on my old Thinkpad X13 with a USB wifi dongle. Install was easy, very clean and spare. Read each message carefully! Of course I did not.I had to disable UEFI boot. Took me two tries to figure that out.Its easiest to install fvwm with X11, comfortable to me, but wow it's pretty damn spare. But the first thing I usually do is install xfce thn delete literally every keyboard shortcut and replace with control-1 to select desktop 1, etc. and that's it. /etc is clean. /etc/rc.d has one text conf file per daemon/service. If I was running racks and racks of servers maybe I'd want systemd. But I'm not.

OMFG I had forgot how maddening fvwm configuration is. I keep learning it and forgetting it. The most recent saved config is from 2006 and I remember nothing I did in it.OpenBSD comes with few fonts, and they're punitively small; 8 point, render about 1/16" high on the screen, and I can't scale it up past 18, which is barely tolerable (what do points even mean here) .

I hsve no idea what im gonna do when the time comes. I need no additional features. I use a lot of storage for music but that's partly laziness (dragndrop instead of curate).Honestly i can detect no difference functionally from my old pixel 4. I just shift my habits around to match what I've got. This shit wants to steal too much attention, money, personal data, and does not actually improve my life beyond the basic shit they all have now.
