And 1 minute after the RE7 leaves, they announce that due to catenary repairs, the ECE 397 has been cancelled.They could have let us know before the only alternative train for the hour left…This is the third time I’ve tried to catch a DSB Talgo 230 and had it cancelled on me. I’m starting to believe that they don’t actually exist.

On the rails again… #Interrail This is actually the second train of the day, after I headed down to Köln Hbf to have lunch with a friend.I’m grabbing an earlier train than I originally planned to get down to Saarbrücken this evening, via Mannheim.I’m starting off on a nice and swift :ice_4: ICE 4.Normally I prefer to take the slightly slower train via the Rhine Valley railway, but I decided that the faster train would be a better idea today, so I could get to my destination quicker.

On the rails again…Today I am taking the MiraDouro, the classic train that runs from Porto São Bento to Pocinho, along the banks of the Douro River. Today’s itinerary: https://moof.space/trip/2026-04-24I’m told that this is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, and is a UNESCO world heritage journey.The first hour, apparently, is much less pretty and interesting than the remaining two and a half. As I had a very bibulous evening last night, sampling the local wines, my hangover is very much appreciating this fact. Though the general level of noise of this train, between the diesel loco, the train horn, the clattering carriage and the general chatter of the people in at least 4 languages I can pick up right now is much less pleasant. Time for noise-cancelling earbuds and some hydration

And as we reach Régua, the first major tourist stop. And half the train gets off, presumably to catch a river cruise.On the platform, a lady is shouting out and selling hand made hard sweets, individually wrapped in waxed paper, a euro for a bag. She is selling them to people on the train through the windows.I bought a bag, partly because of the quaintness, but also because I felt the need for something sweet after my very salty breakfast of salted almonds.Have some more pretty pictures…

We made it to Pocinho with about a 20 minute delay. This was partly due to something that looked like a temporary speed restriction that had a bunch of yellow boxes with flashing lights near the track to mark it.The locomotive then did a run-around, and we departed back westward towards Porto.I’m riding the train now as far as Pinhão, where I’m going to break the trip and have some lunch and a walk around…

I mostly stayed quiet this afternoon because my hangover and lack of sleep caught up with the heat and gentle breeze, and after a good lunch I mostly walked around zombie like and ended up snoozing on the train back.I was also not aided by the fact that I hadn’t brought my spare spare battery with me today, and my phone was running on fumes.The train down was as pleasant as the train up - more so in a way because it was less crowded - and I did get to see, but not photograph, golden hour and sunset.I made it to Porto São Bento at 21:05 officially, 30 minutes later than timetabled.

Can anyone point to any independent research not paid for by manufacturers or sellers that looks at how effective mobile phone screen protectors actually are? I don’t think they are worth it, but I am happy to be proved wrong.

I’m vaguely looking at putting some #railway #timetables onto paper to have a backup during a trip I’m planning this summer, where I expect both power and coverage to be sparse.I’m guessing that Fedi is the right place to ask this: Is there a guide to timetable layout best practices out there? Preferably in English? Or some sort of standard?Most of my online searching seems to bring up information on how to schedule #trains, rather than how to present the schedule to users.

Hello! And welcome to Day 2 of Jet Lag: The Game - Hide + Seek: this time it’s less Bad! It’s a bright and airy 10:00am, @quixoticgeek, @wendy and I are in Halle an der Saale, and it’s time for us to Go! Go! Go!Today it’s @darkphoenix’s turn to hide, and they are somewhere with the borders of the Germany, within three hour’s train ride from here. We’ve got all day to try and find them, and we have to beat the time of 8 hours and 40 minutes it took to find me yesterday. They’ve promised us something “different” today, and we’re looking forward to finding out what that means.
