i have a 286, on which i am currently writing some math calculation programs.i also have a vintage FPGA development board that plugs into the ISA bus.i am really tempted to play with this and see if there is any kind of math i can usefully offload, using it as an accelerator

i successfully taught my housemates how to do almost-Shamir's-Secret-Sharing with pen and paper, so that they could, together, determine the new PIN number to my android tablet and unlock it, as fun exercise

the only notable difference between the simple version and the real version is that you do all the math modulo a big prime number, in order to prevent a potential attacker from recovering some small number of the lowest significant bits of the secret and/or reducing the possible search space

open watcom's vi implementation is also pretty good. and funky. i often accidentally mix metaphors by accident when using DOS since i also use so much UNIX, and it's almost more jarring when it works. and open watcom vi happily accepts most common vi commands and most common DOS editor shortcuts

i am watching Star Trek: Voyager for the first time and umdo they ever get over the thing they're doing so far in season 1 (i'm halfway through) where the first 15-20 minutes of the episode is basically just a massive lore dump that only sort of makes sense, and the rest of the episode lets us watch the rube goldberg machine implied by the first half coming to its logical conclusion?like, it's not NOT working, but for the episodes that are bad, it's pretty bad

i'm mostly using this for temporary testing while i reconfigure this computer's operating system. but i like any excuse to drag this thing outi'm installing Novell DOS over MS-DOS, and then i will be setting up DESQview/X again for the first time in a few years

i personally believe that after your open source software project becomes something depended on by millions for important things, you are morally obligated to create some sort of organization to steward it, so that you are not a single point of failure (including failing to make good decisions for the project because your own goals differ)if i ever make anything like that, which ends up on any significant fraction of OS installs, this is what i will do

tried to get my Xilinx XC3000 BORG board installed in one of my 486en, but i am having difficulty finding jumper diagrams and it is definitely conflicting with other hardware. i am probably going to have to set this up in a different machine another time, dedicated only to figuring this out, after looking more carefully at the board's design to figure out how it is intended to work(if you are going to send me pinout diagrams you found from a search engine, please pay close attention to the fact that i said XC3000 and not XC4000)
