       It's wild to me that apparently Xorg has literally 4 FUCKING YEARS worth of patches in the master branch, literally thousands, that just never got merged into stable because "X is dead" became a dogmatic statement, to the detriment of anyone who prefers Xfce or whatever. And no, this doesn't mean I think XLibre is a good project or whatever. I think it's dogshit. The main reason XLibre is maddening to me is because Enrico Weitgeit is an insane, toxic crank of a man. But he's also literally the only person to have even bothered doing anything with X for years. He did deserve his ban from FDo. He does suck. His project sucks. It's just ludicrous that it was even necessary.        @moses_izumi@fe.disroot.org @libreleah@mas.toWayland is superior in every way as long as you don't use Xfce, or software that uses window positioning, or don't rely on a graphics card that can't handle always being in compositing mode, or don't need to disable modesetting for whatever reason (such as Nvidia deciding to ship broken drivers for over 6 months), or don't want/need screensavers, or don't need xdotool, or don't need screenshots to work reliably, I could keep going but I'm not going to.

       @q66@gts.q66.moe @TheOneDoc@tech.lgbtAn Nvidia GPU is also the only reason I'm even still fully tethered to the glibc world. I know how to run shit like Steam in a chroot if need be (yes I'm one of those people who avoids Flatpak like the plague and doesn't even have it installed on my Artix Linux system) but you can't do that with graphics drivers. And having actually working graphics drivers is, for obvious reasons, a hard requirement.

       @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems @technomancy@hey.hagelb.orgI'm of the belief that not being on a rolling release but instead being on a fixed release system is setting yourself up for endless issues. I've broken so many self-declared stable Linux distros because I needed to use a piece of software that literally did not work on the absolutely ancient ass versions of software that came with Debian Stable or even the at the time latest versions of Ubuntu. I also feel like trying to completely eradicate LLM extruded software from your system is an uphill, losing battle if even the goddamn kernel is being committed to with the plagiarism machine. Does this mean I think it's a waste of time to make alternatives that aren't being fucked with by promptfondlers? No. It does however mean that I think staying on extremely out of date versions of software is generally a bad idea (unless it's, like, the current version of rsync which was made infinitely worse by the LLM extruders).
