       @ariadne Oh, you're in Créteil ! France has mountain resorts, thus a flourishing ski-lift industry that has found a new market now that the lowest mountain resorts are running out of snow. Plus it's cheaper than digging a métro extension, and there was no more space on the ground.

       @ariadne They needed more capacity on a route where more tracks was impractical, I would guess. It is far from the only such thing in the world. If you’ve got elevated terrain at both ends, or just steep terrain on one end, it is much more sensible than trying to push trains uphill, which is frequently problematic for the trains made for human mass transit.
