Mastodon dot social is run by an EU corporate charitable entity that is probably immune to the local laws governing #SocialMedia everywhere except the EU and even there probably is exempt. Other #Fediverse sites all have their own circumstances. Xitter has political protection & ignores laws with impunity. For now.

@ariadne @xarvos Maybe my brain is broken but to me it seems like that’s a more promising approach than LLMs. You are at least starting with functional things. I mean, I don’t think it is a good idea, just that it has the same shape as a better idea…

@ariadne Recently someone thanked me for explaining SpamAssassin years ago on a mailing list. He was grateful because it got him interested in classification theory and that lead him to learning about LLMs. That became a fruitless discussion with my therapist. I’m still a bit disturbed. The whole industry is splitting between people who have surrendered their agency to software and those of us who feel profoundly morally injured.

@ariadne @whitequark Data point: In 2 days recently one server I help protect had connections from 60k different /20 network blocks. Often thousands simultaneously, all from different IPs. Yes, I blocked them all. I then had to go back and unblock myself, 2 of my 6 fellow sysadmins, and 3 of 12 valued data contributors. I’m pretty sure we’re also blocking some legit visitors, but it was the only way to shed load.

@ariadne They needed more capacity on a route where more tracks was impractical, I would guess. It is far from the only such thing in the world. If you’ve got elevated terrain at both ends, or just steep terrain on one end, it is much more sensible than trying to push trains uphill, which is frequently problematic for the trains made for human mass transit.
