       @ifixcoinops looks like there are parts missing on DVD too?I think this technology was used quite often in the past: roughly speaking, shoot in e.g. 16:9, considering that everything should fit in a smaller 16:9 rectangle; then for cinema, crop it to 2.35:1, and for home video (which back then meant 4:3 TVs) crop to 4:3. Also for fancier productions, cropping doesn't have to always be in the center, in different scenes it can be more to the left or to the right (for TV crops) or to the bottom of to the top (for cinema crops), depending on the scene content / on where the important stuff is in it (to center the important stuff).So the entire picture only exists on the original film (which also might have some extra stuff in it, like shooting equipment etc), and I assume that for modern home releases they just scan the cinema release because the TV release also misses a lot and probably doesn't exist on film but only in 480p form
