       @futurebird @petealexharris as I understand, no, they're utterly useless outside of gen"AI" (except as very expensive space heaters), and also even if the bubble will somehow not burst by that time, they'll be roughly as useful in datacenters as 286 CPUs are useful in datacenters now.

       @IngaLovinde @futurebird @petealexharrisI’m very skeptical that they’ll be useless (see:this thread), and I think the market will flood with them. They might no longer be cutting edge, but they’ll sure be good.There will be practical concerns in getting them to work, and little commercial interest in it, but my guess is that they’ll become the heart of DIY machines.I have an obsolete bitcoin miner I got to run as to just this experiment, and I’m following others’ successes.

       @JoshuaACNewman @futurebird @petealexharris the latest generations are very optimized for FP4 specifically. AFAIK their performance in regular scenarios (drawing graphics (they cannot even output graphics), do other matrix math with higher precision than FP4, other kinds of DSP) is not better, and maybe even worse, than with regular high-end consumer GPUs, while drawing 10x as much power.
