Battletech:Overview(1/4) OK, this one is mighty impressive. Its your Firaxis X-com style game that tries to closely mimic the table top game Battletech. I’ve never played the table top but more on that later. You command a mercenary band, bounding around the Inner Sphere picking up contracts to make some dough, gather some fallen loot, and just kill stuff using your Battle Mechs piloted by your roster of Mech Warriors. The strategy is all in positioning, weapon loadouts...#greyknightgames

Overview(2/4) order of fire, speed, and utilizing each weapon’s/mech’s/warrior’s special abilities to kick ass. Creaming the opfor gets you the biggest payouts and most salvage (important for money and collecting mechs to add to your armory). Its got a great progression system. You start small and weak and slowly collect better mechs and train your MechWarriors to be better in combat. Soon, you become quite overpowered and anyone who’s played this will understand. Its...#greyknightgames

Overview(3/4) actually a sandbox game where you just bop around constantly making your merc company stronger. I did find that the game eventually gets a little repetitive once you have max skilled pilots and a lance or two (a lance is 4 BattleMechs that you deploy in a mission) that you never depart from. At this point, you just walk all over the toughest missions laughing at the destruction you leave behind and collecting your payday. One solution to the repetition is, yup...#greyknightgames

Overview(4/4) you guessed it, DLCs. I have them all and they do add some more flavor but the real win seems to be the mod community. I did some research and apparently you can mod up community built campaigns and even redesigns that near change the whole game making it far more intricate and vast. I’m guessing this is to get the game closer to the table top? All in all, very very fun and I’ll be buying the game to play with the mods in the near future.#greyknightgames

Story: Honestly, it is complete trash. Its recommended to play the story campaign first as it acts as a sort of tutorial. The story missions pay huge money so its tough to lose plus rewards you with some bad ass gear. “Career” mode (more open sandbox mode) doesn’t come with these safety rails. I literally spammed the “Next” button in story speeches, obviously including DLC. If you play this game, do the campaign first to get a good feel then shift to Career mode.#greyknightgames

Graphics: Great! The map terrain looks really neat with great details. The various biomes where you fight have their own specific feel and keep the somewhat various maps fresh. Mechs look damn cool and battle animations are really fun to watch. There’s an option to speed them up and took me a while to activate that; that’s how satisfying they are. Oh, and every Mech kill gets a nice BOOM! Especially that Archer LRM 40 blast hehehe#greyknightgames

Music: Fantastic! Seems there’s biome specific music but it does set a battle ready mood. The music even cranks up when shit starts going down. Sound effects are great. Each weapon gives a different destructive sound coupled with when Mech parts get blown off. Satisfying seeing and hearing that damn gauss rifle blowing off that enemy Highlander. Also fun hearing the MechWarriors saying things after events/commands. “Come on people lets make it happen!” (she’s always in bay 1).#greyknightgames

Gripes: The sandbox design and how the economy works is actually the only issue i really have. Its so open and accommodating (a cakewalk mission could pay the same as a 4v8 assault rapefest) that the progression of difficulty doesn’t keep pace, rather you can choose to go anywhere and take on anything. So your 4 Atlas lance vs a couple Spiders you could do all day. The challenge is where the fun is and you have to consciously choose to chase it. I hear mods fix this.#greyknightgames

Conclusion: If the mods will live up to what I’m reading, this game will get 5/5. Ok I’m biased that i love the X-Com style games (both generations) and this one really fits the 2nd gen but the BattleTech universe is very satisfying. These guys did great with vanilla and I’m betting mods breath immense life into this. Just get past the uninteresting story (oh and the “they” pronoun, wtf, I’ll mod that out) and the game itself is really fun. Sunk hundreds of hours into it.#greyknightgames

Epilogue: btw, in spirit of the BattleTech universe after playing this game, it should be relatively obvious which one I’m playing now. Guys, another epic one inbound soon.#greyknightgames

@greyknight That sounds like a really fun romp. Mods can really make a game, especially when the community is dedicated.

@fkq1q2r2 i know its a table top game too so likely that's where the support is, trying to makeit more like the tabletop. from what i read, it seems super intense and got my attention. worst case, it breathes new life into this game. on its own, its fun. got 700 days into my career run and just started feeling a little repetitive. the newer version and mods would definitley mitigate the repetition
