Noob question about fusion reactors:According to [1]:- the problem with coils over straight pipes is they have to end somewhere- the problem with simple toroidal reactors is the B field decreases as you go further from the torus's center- a problem with stellarators is that there are areas of stronger and weaker field as you go around the torus, and they can act as ion reflectorswhy not straight pipe but with stronger field at the ends, to reflect the ions?[1]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPUAKW1Dyek

@stefanurb.bsky.social hence I said "simple torus".AFAIU, one of the ways to cope with this is a Stellarator, the other is a Tokamak. Is that correct?

@stefanurb.bsky.social a torus in which all magnetic field lines are in the toroidal direction, and are created by coils wrapping around the surface of the torus in the poloidal direction

@stefanurb.bsky.social Does toroidal pinch not work because of the field gradient in the radial (or what do you call it in a torus) direction?Or are there other reasons for it to not work?

@stefanurb.bsky.social by "radial" I meant radial in cylindrical coordinates, not radial in torus coordinates

ok, apparently magnetic mirrors were tried early on and had their own share of instabilities https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_mirror

@stefanurb.bsky.social right, so my point was, has anyone tried not making those helical field lines, and instead using the magnetic reflector phenomenon (which is apparently a hinderance in Stellarators) to make a non-toroidal fusion reactor.By now I found that yes, someone tried https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_mirrorand there were issues with it, and wikipedia doesn't do a good job of explaining those issues, but I'll try to read on.Thanks for your time and sorry for being a noob.
