       Up through the Pixel 8 series of Google phones, I was a reliable annual buyer. That stopped with the 9 series when Google started its relentless AI push, turning its devices into things over which buyers had less and less control. With continued security updates, I'm sticking with what I have.

       @dangillmor likewise.  When the security updates end for my current Pixel, I might go with Motorola's planned release of a GrapheneOS-compatible phone.

       @dangillmor Same. After Pixel 7 I switched to Nothing, which has one very light AI component you can totally ignore.

       @dangillmor My 7a no longer lies flat on the counter which means the battery has swollen. I occasionally have issues with calls but I don't know if that's the phone or service in my area or questionable Wifi. I'm tempted to get a 10a and put Graphene on it out of the box. I don't use the 7a for finanacial or airlines and will likely install the Playstore but I don't know how well the COPY OLD PHONE TO NEW PHONE conversion will work.Thoughts?

       @dangillmor 9 has memory tagging which is a significant security improvement. With grapheneos on pixel you get a phone with security on par of ios and better privacy than anything available. no AI features

       @dangillmor I had Nexus then every pixel up to 6, then saw no reason to upgrade until 9, and at this point barring dropping it I suspect 12 will be my next refresh. The incremental value seems to be missing while the price keeps jumping (iPhone is no better) and the case/mount changes just add unneeded costs. My laptop and iPad cycles are similarly elongating (iPad especially influenced by the cost of a new magic keyboard case)

       @dangillmor On a 7a still. When I'm forced to replace this thing, I'll set up the new phone and then bash this one with a hammer. Should be satisfying.
