@itsfoss Because it was the most stable thing around. Other distros didn't work, required too much terminal, or had their edge cases.Today Linux has foundations hegemonized and became stable to daily drive, from Debian to Arch.Before, the problem was the maintainer. Today, the problem is the user.

@itsfossFor me, it was Raspbian. It was not yet named Raspberry Pi OS at the time. After trying it on a Raspberry Pi some time in middle school, I got a Raspberry Pi 3B for my birthday later that year and installed the same OS with NOOBS, which was still maintained at the time.

@itsfoss Kinda. My first contact with Linux was Slax Live (version 8 I think) kill bill edition (which came with wine preinstalled). I messed around with that for a while. Then my first installed distro was Ubuntu (in 2008 I think)

@itsfoss nope, Ubuntu didn't even exist back then. It was slackware, installed from floppy disks. And of course you had to configure and compile your own kernel back then. Moved on to SuSE and much later to Ubuntu. Tried a lot of other distributions. Nowadays it's Ubuntu running on Windows subsystem for Linux.

Slackware in 1993, Linux 0.99.I waited until someone created a SCSI driver, then when one was available in beta I took the plunge.I also organized its other users (we were all on a mailing list) to get together and buy the driver author (search indicates that would have been "Drew Eckhardt" with "Eric Youngdale") an early optical drive as a thank you. It was a cool mini-project.I suppose the title of this article is one of those things deliberately phrased to provoke many disagreeing responses.P.S. search indicates there were 600 (six hundred) sites on the World Wide Web by December 1993 -- they used to announce lists of the latest sites to join.My browser was NCSA Mosaic (released March 1993), which was the first widely used graphical browser.The first search engines appeared around then (W3Catalog and Aliweb).

@itsfoss lol I'm old. Ubuntu didn't come out until after I'd graduated college. I started with Slackware, for the most part. Linux was really unstable back then so after that I went to Solaris (I also got a secondhand Sparc 5).I didn't come back until years later with Ubuntu MATE because I needed something really lightweight for an old laptop.

@itsfoss My First Linux was DLD, „Deutsche Linux Distribution“ (“German Linux Distribution”); the company (Delix) was later (in 1999) acquired by Red Hat.Then I tried SuSE Linux. And switched to FreeBSD.Many years later, I sometimes had to use Ubuntu. But I continued to use FreeBSD whenever possible … ;-)
