This iLok business is pretty rat shit. You have to mail the broken USB key back to them, then pay USD $130 to get a replacement mailed back. Then you have to contact each vendor for reactivation.Or you buy a new key for AUS $100 then buy theft insurance on top of the zero downtime that you should have already bought when … wait …blarrgh. Yeah I think I just don’t buy anything needing iLok ever again.Is it possible to fix a USB? #musicproduction

@lardmotel I guess it all depends on what is broken about the USB. But I suspect it would need specialised skills and equipment and massive expense.

@lardmotel Good luck with all that. You might find most of the companies pretty helpful.Theft coverage is included in ZDT these days. I used to find iLok a pain in many ways, but nowadays the system works smoothly and the company is responsive. Paying annually for the privilege of running copy-protection software might rub some up the wrong way but IMHO there are much more unfair charges than $30 p.a. for “insurance” and a standard way of handling the necessary evil of copy protection. #2c

@phantomcircuit It’s just a bit too late. It looks like I have to have a working key to apply the Loss and Theft feature. Otherwise the postage to and from the USA is crazy - US$130 just for them to send the new key back. Thinking about it carefully.

@lardmotel Yes, I suppose otherwise it would be like trying to start an insurance policy after your house has burned down, and these people are no fool$. However, politely emailing the software companies to ask for help may well be productive, and once you have received the replies, you will at least be better informed about what your options are.

@rasurA license can go on the USB key or computer. If the computer fails you have the key and vice versa. But some companies only give you one or the other and I chose the key. Sigh. The computer is still chugging along with some licenses. Still thinking 🤔

@phantomcircuit You’re right. I still have the serial numbers as well. Maybe I start with zynactiq as I bought a whole bunch of their tools.GRM on the other hand don’t sell my old suites anymore. And I bought them through Don’t Crac which closed down so that might be a different challenge. 🪤

@lardmotel @blurk I was looking at it as a no other options left kind of thing, but yes if you can get a replacement for money it may be worth it. Too bad you could not get the data off as a backup somehow like to a file on your hard drive.

@lardmotel Had to look at my ILok to remind myself.. ISWYM about locked licenses, but I thought it was all clown-based these days, and the interwebs seem to confirm.. /me i'd go the "hey $audio_company my license is on a dead ilok can i shift it to computer pls" but ofc depends on how many licenses you have.or apparently you stick the dead ilok in the freezer for a few minutes and then while it's cold enough transfer the licenses? (people hand wave about bad solder joints..)

@lardmotel @rasur Soundtoys and Zynaptiq were both fine to deal with when I had a computer die with some iLok licences once. I've never had the dongle tho.
