Let's talk about #Linux distributions, applications, end of life and unsupported software, and all of that stuff, because as the "distro vs apps" debate heats up again, I think it's time we finally learned that graphical apps shouldn't be correlated to the system's base in any way, shape or form.Let's see why Linux distros need to evolve now:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ebkQq5TcMw

@thelinuxEXP I don't agree. I think both things should exist. Sometimes OS distros protect users from certain developer errors/limitations, and vice-versa.Example for many years Debian couldn't distribute Firefox, it even created their own fork to distribute as part of the OS, it also does their own build witch has different build options than the official build, and it does it to protect users.

@thelinuxEXP settlement argument was going to be solved but to gnome took its way too far. At the end of the day. Apps should be whatever the dev wants or distro want. It should however link help to the distro and not upstream. A banner on first open for major updates stating this should be more then enough

@thelinuxEXP When someone installs Debian they know what they're getting into, and they expect to have outdated packages. Not true for Mint, which is always advertised as beginner friendly. I think that's the main issue. (Same thing for Ubuntu LTS btw) Having the "stable" approach (which isn't really fair to call it that) for a general purpose distro is senseless imo.I don't wanna trigger anyone, but maybe they ought to ship these apps as a... Y'know...

@thelinuxEXP IMHO I can see why app devs are frustrated about this. Their issue trackers shouldn't be littered with stuff they don't want to deal with anymore, even with automated closure by bots based on version/distro. IDK if the git solutions have some automation *while* someone is filling the form, warning users? Otherwise the derivative projects should just rename the app and replace any support links to their own stuff, and merely mention the source project if needed.1/2

@thelinuxEXP Yeah, no. I use LTS distros like Mint because I don't want to worry that an update with the "latest and greatest" is going to break my computer. Stable doesn't mean "no bugs" but t does mean those bugs are known and have workarounds. I'm not looking to be surprised all the time. This LTS bashing is tiring. Mint has just worked for me, for many years. Tried a more "bleeding edge" distro recently - joypad inputs were going crazy and Nautilus crashed constantly. Barf. Leave Mint alone

@thelinuxEXP Maybe somebody could answer me, how hard is it to build an application on older base if it was made for newer runtime? I remember backward compatibility being terrible on Linux, though I guess it's more of a forward compatibility question.

@thelinuxEXPThere are many people who dislike feature changes every 3-6 months. Running 2 year old software before upgrading to a newer version is a choice, and a valid one. Linux mint is targeting those people.

@thelinuxEXP I am very much looking foward to the day when Gnome OS will be released as fully usable end user experience, like it was announced last year. No more distro stuff just Gnome + Flatpak (same for KDE). Right now Bluefin is cool, this 'atomic' model works great, what's left is to learn container usage or preferably have simple GUIs for stuff like 'gluetun'. Most of the old model distro stuff should be allowed to fade into niches, where people enjoy legacy software and tinker with it.

@jxself It's, on the contrary, entirely relevant: they offer a service that fixes what these distros don't: they stick to EOL packages that they don't always patch up, where TuxCare does these patches :)

@homo_particeps You could also get a supported version that doesn't get updates every 3 months.

@not3ottersinacoat No one is saying you need the latest and greatest. You can also get the oldest supported version, just not an end of life one.

@nwcs I don't use Arch, and I have no stake in any distro. Fedora, for example, does this better: fixed versions for 6 months, but not reliant on end of life ones. And yes, there are bugs and CVEs that go unpatched with this distro, model. When you're using GIMP 2.10 or an OEL version of LibreOffice, you might not encounter issues yourself, but they're there for other users :)

@nekohayo @homo_particeps @Schlemuel @Isofruit And let's not forget that this also affects ALL apps in the repos. GIMP 3 is NOT a minor change compared to GIMP 2.10 for example.

@homo_particeps It's not just "another style of schedule". It's voluntarily shipping end of life versions, and punting the work to the app devs on top of that.If it was "we only ship the oldest supported version", no one would complain, you're still using an old, but well tested version, you're just using a supported one. Won't break any systems, won't require updates every week, it's stable, tested, and supported.

L'enfer...
