       @tranquillity They would count as connections, although it'd work best if you had examples of their breadth of knowledge, like personal projects or blog posts.That way you can say something like "friendly relationship with X, who has posted about Y at <link>/developed a project relevant to Y at <link>".Of course you'd also have to be willing for your prospective employer to know about your friend and look into them. I doubt "I know people who know stuff" is gonna hold much value for them.As a sidenote, there'd be the matter of some companies having projects that are sensitive info, so you'd have to be careful with how you phrase such questions, and any queries you pose to such friends for work reasons might have to be conducted on an official basis.
