Would a cancer patient be treated by the NHS with homeopathy rather than the harshest, most aggressive drugs available? But childbirth only happens to women, and since nature is so wonderful, females should embrace their inner goddess, squat and get on with it.Of all the terrible stories that have been emerging from midwife Donna Ockenden’s reviews into NHS maternity services – the most recent of which looked at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust – the one I found the saddest was the woman denied medical intervention when she went into labour at home. She was told that this would break ‘the oxytocin bubble’ which she and her imminent baby were forming in order to bond. Her baby died, like so many others, so the ‘oxytocin bubble’ was neither here nor there, as it turned out.

@Flick WTF?Natural childbirth is great, if all is going well and if the woman chooses it. Forcing natural births on women who don't want them is fucking barbaric, even if the baby comes out safely. I had a drug free homebirth with my youngest, but I also had 4 ampules of pethidine on the mantlepiece in case I changed my mind! Knowing they were available whenever I wanted them made everything else bearable. My mum was high as a kite when she delivered me. No idea what that did to the bubble, but we bonded just fine!

@EatKnitSleep2 @Flick My kid's head wouldn't fit through, so I had a c-section. First thing the nurse said when they got him out was that it was a good thing the head didn't fit, because the shoulders absolutely wouldn't. Natural childbrith was my first choice, but it just wasn't an option.As for the bonding, well I woke up stoned from the pain meds and groggy, looked over and said 'oh, look, a baby!' then went back to sleep. Things got better after I rested a bit.
