       A gig night where bands are angry about one act using AI. At no stage do they critique the music. It’s just an instant ban. Sure, there’s slop. There’s been pre-programmed riffs & samples advertised for years now along with pre-cooked DJ mix parts. Slop has been here for decades.They should let the music speak and then critique.        @phantomcircuit @lardmotel @dj2mn does he generate the whole song using some online AI SongGen syste? It sounded more like just the Vocals and the avatars being generated that way (perhaps I misread), but also: see Sampling As Artistic Theft, see also Gorillaz as Virtual Band members. Nothing new here except the outrage, smells like to me.

The common factor is this: you have to work hard with samples, or sequencers or AI or whatever tool is at hand to rise above the default.So if you use samples without care or effort it's the same as being rather awful at the bassoon. As I would be.And working with AI needs to be a critical process. Make a thing, critique the thing, understand the faults and try again.#music #ai

       @rasur @phantomcircuit @dj2mn Watching my director mate Kriv work with AI film tools. He has many titles under his belt, expertise in framing, acting, dialogue... He's working on a short using SeeDance. Very few people can talk to that AI tool and get results like he does. Most of it ends up 'on the floor', because it's a bad take.I'm using some AI to decorate a game. I'm three years into it and not yet satisfied with the look. The fault is in accepting the machine as having expertise. #ai

       @lardmotel I understand the objections, but the reactions are to the perceived onslaught of AI in the arts rather than to one artist’s use of AI, which in a previous technological era would have been hailed as innovative or at least a novel gimmick.Previous fears for the survival of “real” music were provoked by the phonograph, synthesisers, sampling and more. That is not to say that concern about AI in music is necessarily just more of the same! But maybe future shock is part of the story.

       @lardmotel @rasur @phantomcircuit @dj2mn The general dumbing down of discourse into things being good or evil is tiring. Mobs and pitchforks aren't conducive to creativity.But the tech-broification of our creative tools is definitely something to resist. There will be a proliferation of interesting, niche creative tools and approaches, largely thanks to AI-assisted coding. It's already happening.
