       just had my first experience with a nontechnical luser (a very nice middle aged midwestern woman) trying to probably entirely unnecessarily vibecode some app and clearly having zero idea wtf any of the shit Claude was saying meant, which was of course all unnecessarily verbose and overcomplicated wording for "web app with database backend"we truly are living in the future!!1!

       @nyx all the people trying to vibecode and ending up lost is actually a pretty good market. I've been hiring people who would never had hire a programmer before but now start to understand the value of it.

       @nyx @sampler it's because LLMs are pretty good at writing imperative code but utter dogshit at designing higher-order structures, which makes sense when you consider that the transformer / attention model that all LLMs are based on was originally theorized as a natural language translator. there's a solid chance that junior-level code monkey devs are on the way out but trve "software engineers" aren't really at much risk for the near-future at least (although of course this creates a bit of a catch-22 in the talent pipeline).

       @rowb1t @nyx i can use AI better to write code than someone who has never written code, because i know how to ask the questions by the virtue of understanding how software should be structured, i know what kind of answer i need. (mostly don't vibe code tho) at this stage in time , most people don't know how to ask the right questions so they can't get the right answers, they think they know what they want but they don't really know what they want -- which was frustrating to deal with before AI was big, had to spend too much effort before on giving people what they *needed* but convince them it was their idea / what they wanted when what they wanted was wrong but what they needed is something they didn't understand and i think AI has made it easier for people to understand that they really don't understand what they need. just speculation on my part I think AI will get better at understanding this contradiction between what people want and what people need as time goes on tho

       @rowb1t @nyx There's a saying out there that what makes a doctor a doctor or an engineer an engineer is they know how to search through their libraries of literature for the answer they need, even if they don't have it off the top of their head -- I like that one -- in theory any literate adult "can" read through medical journals etc but lack the necessary context of someone trained in the field

       @sampler @nyx this is a big part of the reason why a vocal minority within computer science have been saying for decades that algorithmic thinking (or at least basic CS literacy) should be part of any liberal arts curricula.
