       @herissonrose 😂 she needs a lead. or a collar with a bell on ... it's really very not pleasant and i'm worried about the cats. kitten's not eating today and they both keep insisting on going up to the bedroom (mezzanine, 8 million degrees) to sleep. i have to keep carting them down again ...

Feeding him v early morning/night, w the *one food* he loves is working for now. Once it gets above 25 (8am) he won't eat at all.Is your kitchen space tiled floor and an actual room w door (not open plan crap?)        @herissonrose kitchen/living space is tiled and the coolest room rn (still over 28 but the other room/upstairs are well over 30 now). and it has a door (the only door other than on the bathroom ... husband put it up when he found it in the back of the barns). i'm pretty much forcing kitten to stay in here with me in front of the fan unless he goes to lie directly on the floor. but pia WILL NOT. she keeps going back to the bed and i just found her up there with all her legs in the air like a dead fly. she seems ok but so so hot. and if we shut the door, she'll just scream and scratch at it and upset him ... finally got him to eat a bit by squeezing him fresh packet (as opposed to fridged and heated partial packet). she's eating ok thankfully. but his things that should be pink look very pale ... trying to keep him cool and hydrated ... and tomorrow's meant to be worse.

       @moonrabbit Yeesh that's bad.. if anything he should be *pinker* given the heat, especially the ears. Might be the lack of food, or something more serious like a heart problem. Does he have red gums (heat stress symptom) or pale?Pia is uncomfortable / unhappy so seeks comfort in a safe place - the bed. Darcy does the same here (and his ears are blushed reddish rn, despite not eating v much either)Have you tried bringing some of the bedding downstairs (stuff she likes, that smells of you?)

       @herissonrose ha we mostly can't see his ears. but they look normal from what we can. gums and nose are pale although less so than earlier. pale nose is a Symptom for him when he's unwell generally; he seems to have some circulation issues so this would tie in with that. he had a full blood count done 3wks ago and no anaemia, had his heart listened to as well and nothing obviously untoward then or the others times (he's been to the vet a lot, poor love). thinking/hoping it's just his usual unwellness ramped up ... we're keeping a close eye though. he's having a wash atm and seems ok enough (if grumpy that i keep making him sit on the cooling mat)he'll have acupuncture in a bit which usually helps 🍀 pia's very particular, has Her Places and Will Not Be Moved. i tried to relocate her nest, but no.we might have to shut them in here tomorrow though and hope she can cope ...

Not much you can do rn except keep him with you and cool/comfy as possible.Pia is like Darcy then - I have to wash / dry his bedding same day as Replacement Will Not Do. One of mine (Mina) will *only* drink from the tap, when I'm there. I leave, she stops. And drinking requires a minute of yelling / dancing / nose bonks first.😩 😩 😹

By August, the night temperatures are already falling.Long term forecasts are based on historical climate patterns, which kinda doesn't work when those patterns are breaking down.Even prediction models can only model what *used to* happen, and what we *think* we know. Weather is basically spirally air, which is Fluid Dynamics (complicated, much maths) x Chaos Theory (worse).

       @mirabilos @moonrabbit The weather forecasts aren't very accurate at all 10 days ahead.. even after decades of time + modern supercomputers.Because of how bloody complex spirally fluids are. How many tiny differences ripple outwards into big ones further ahead you go in time (and there are so many things to account for!)So I'm a bit wary of any long term "forecasts". There's a limit to how accurate they can be (not very)(My Dad used to work as a Meteorologist for UK Met Office)

       @mirabilos @moonrabbit The AMOC thing is scary because current measurements are *worse* that the predictive models thought. At least the ones I was studying back then. A model is a pencil sketch of reality, and leaves a lot of stuff out. However much yo want or need to include. However accurate you try to make it. (Plus can't include factors not discovered yet, Ir that seemed not to affect it, but torns out they do..)Plus the *complexity* of it. Tiny differences become huge error margins.

I’m amazed by what people all know.I had only a high-level vague overview of that (and, as you could tell, I knew of Kachelmann but not the details either, I guess better weather predictions were not high on my priority list so far). It was (conservatively) estimated to be decades or centuries ahead, if it happened at all.To see media talking about that possibility is v jarring.But that's the, err point about Tipping Points.Reality (and the model of it) appear stable and not changing that fast. (Unfortunately, we have since realised K1 doesn’t tolerate the soup from the left one, so that’s mostly for K2 now. She does tolerate other fluid treats from the same brand.) The left cans are rather 3 than 2 portions, but K2 is really large so he can drink it in 2 sittings on the same day (storing them while open is a problem). The right cans are two small portions, each more K1’s size. That brand also has little one-portion bags, but the cans empty into the plate more easily.Second photo, the content of a can split onto two cat plates (really just saucers).Third photo, one of them after putting just a little more water into them as it’s extremely hot this week. Not too much, or K1 will refuse it entirely.We order these online, together with other cat snacks and even litter, but pet stores tend to stock them, and even some supermarkets’ pet aisles.You can probably get them from:left brand (we also tried 'thon' and 'légumes')right brand (the one in the photo; didn’t try other variants as this one was an immediate favourite of both)Does this help?

"Permafrost" will not be permanent much longer, or glaciers.Dumping a lot of freshwater into the sea at once changes the salinity.Heavy / cold / salty water sinks. Freshwater floats on top.Changes to this can affect ocean currents.Ocean and air exchange heat and moisture, which creates and drives weather..

       @herissonrose @moonrabbit yes, that much is a given.I remember when we had a January that was… “rather mild”, and someone ran the numbers and said that the delta of current temperature above expected temperature is much larger than the delta in the overhot summers. People just notice the summers because then, the places, especially the cities, are no longer fit for human survival, whereas they enjoy a “mild” winter (unless they’re allergic to hazel pollen, of course).It gave a short shock to some people but was, of course, forgotten. People only seem to care about absolute numbers. (A bit how many americans are convinced ¼ is more than ⅓…)

       @mirabilos @moonrabbit Changes to one affect the others. Mostly slowly.. eg The ocean re-distributes far far more heat around the Earth than the air / weather does. But over decades or longer.El Nino is weird and unusual in that it is a current but fairly predictable event, and the change is so rapid. But it shows how all the currents are linked, and also link to atmosphere / weather

I noticed, because of living in a place where it usually had frosts for 6 months of the year, and snow for 3.That changed suddenly about a decade ago, and again a few years ago.The frosts disappeared. The snow season shorter. Then suddenly, no snow at all....But people don't notice this as much as horrific, dangerous heat.

My favourite organic and “we don’t hide the contents” provider (STRAYZ) also has cat soup on offer, but only in small one-portion bags, and the cats don’t like these as much (plus we get the main food from there, so it’s too similar).

       @mirabilos In France the big couriers tend to subcontract to a smaller one for very remote areas like here.Its usually some underpaid, pissed off guy who leaves us til last, and does not want to lose precious minutes coming up the long road (paid per job). Or can't get up the road at all..My neighbour (retired) was the postman - he would tell us if there were random boxes by the hedge, or someone else got our delivery.It.. has not got any better in the last 5 yrs.

       @herissonrose @moonrabbit the ones I linked to above are 135g and 100g, the latter is the one pictured on the plates.The 100g one is 2-3 portions and the 135g one 3-4 portions nominally. By giving the 100g as two portions (one for each cat) we’re already at the limit.They should not get more than  portion a day.

       @mirabilos @moonrabbit okay! It is 135g.Thanks so much for the portion size info! (There is nothing on the tin, I could have given them too much)So 2 tins = 8 portions.(11 cats!)I assume kittens and tiny cats like Bluebell should get smaller portions?

       @moonrabbit @herissonrose yeah, portion size is roughly proportional to cat size ;)It should have portion info because it also depends on the contents (amount of liquid vs. amount of solid, but also amount of add-ons like Taurin), but the cat food industry… yeah.With 11 cats ok I see the desire for larger cans. But some cats will refuse the soup on a given day so you give their portion to another, etc. so even if you could distribute three cans across 11 cats (unless most of them are very small) start with two and see how they like it.Make sure it’s not fridge-cold, too.

       @moonrabbit @herissonrose I vaguely recall a site where you could calculate the amount of fluid needed per day per cat weight (for cats of average build), but not where. (Maybe one of the foster parents here knows. I don’t want to bother TM_Baumgartner again, though she’s also a vet…) I recall being surprised that Malik needed almost four times what Čara needs but only being a bit over twice her weight.The wet food we have all has the liquid percentage listed, so we know what they get from food already.When hot, more liquid, of course.I know nothing at all about kitten care, though.
