       Seriously what is wrong with Windows Update?Why is it like that?Android, MacOS, Linux (various), ChromeOS, probably Blackberry too update just fine. No fuss, just downloads and installs.Why does Windows download, maybe, install, maybe, fail, retry, reboot, download but slow, fail to download, just gives up, downloads too much, downloads too little, reboots randomly, several times, doesn't tell you what's happening, breaks, freezes, hides, vanishes, won't turn off, won't turn on, won't install.Why is it like that?#windows

       @Baa Probably because their update system was designed for dial-up links where wasting extra CPU cycles on the client computer was preferable if it let you shave a little off the package size.Fast forward to 2026 and most packages just do full file replacements now anyways, but the system is still stuck with a service stack and toolchain from the 90s.Thanks to the nature of proprietary Microslop, who knows all the details of what it does. But if you manually download a cumulative update today and double click to install it, you'll notice that often more than half of the install time is just unpacking the update at the start, while task manager obviously shows only 1 CPU core being loaded, even if you have twenty of them.If that's the first thing I see when just clicking "install" on a file already on my computer, I don't even want to imagine what kind of kraken lurks under the hood of Windows update, sustained entirely on technical debt, decisions from the 90s, assuming multi-core systems still don't exist, and that people are at best using 56k dial-up.
