@virvallis The weather has been terrible today here in the Netherlands. I don’t even understand why the marathons were allowed to go through. A lot of the runners aren’t even properly trained to begin with.

@LadyMont Long ago, we witnessed a marathon in Florida. Sister in law was a runner. We saw a lady 100 yds from the finish line, her legs were so cramped they were like stiff logs. She collapsed right there in front of us to her knees. People ran to help - but “don’t assist her, she’ll be disqualified!” She CRAWLED to the finish line. 😐The agony was difficult to witness. My SIL finished but vomited in the car. 🤢🤮 She had leg cramps for a week. I’m all for people exercising but this was ridiculous. I prefer biking in the woods, alone or with close family. Older neighbor bikes in woods but started timing himself for improvement so I’m not into that. I abandoned riding with him. I assume terrible means too hot.

@virvallis | I assume terrible means too hot.Yes. And not just the hotness. It’s the dampness. Just not weather good for endurance exercise.

@HebrideanHecate @virvallis @LadyMont It does. Runners high is real and quite addictive. But surely the organisers could have foreseen this and either changed the date or held the marathon late in the evening/early in the morning when the temperatures are not so hellish? I don't run anymore, but when I did I used to wait until at least 11pm at this time of year because getting heatstroke/passing out on the towpath do not sound like fun.

@EatKnitSleep2 @HebrideanHecate @virvallis @LadyMont I don’t think a marathon is something you can reschedule on short (less than months) notice.

@Flick @HebrideanHecate @virvallis @LadyMont No, but it seems a bit mad to me that they are scheduled for the summer months in the first place.Maybe it's just because I am terrible at dealing with the heat. I always hated doing PE outdoors in the summer. Who wants to run around getting even more hot and sweaty when you're already hot and sweaty to begin with? Summer sports should be swimming, or stuff you can do inside with shade and air conditioning!

@EatKnitSleep2 @Flick @HebrideanHecate @virvallis Here this time of year weather wise can be perfect for a marathon. But you can’t really predict weather a year ahead when a marathon is planned. What they should’ve done imo is simply cancel it when it became clear it was undoable to run. I was just walking today and I was noticeably walking at much slower pace than usual, just automatically. Can’t imagine having pushed myself to go run let alone a marathon.

@EatKnitSleep2 @HebrideanHecate @virvallis @LadyMont Summer sports should be swimmingCan tell you didn’t go to my school! The pool was basically in a plastic greenhouse. Ice on the water in winter, sauna in summer…. Not sure which was worse!

@LadyMont @Flick @HebrideanHecate @virvallis Do people in the Netherlands run marathons in fancy dress? You see quite a lot of that in the London marathon and I always wonder how they cope with the heat and discomfort even when the weather's cool!

@EatKnitSleep2 @HebrideanHecate @virvallis @LadyMont I ran for years because everyone else did and I never once got a runners high. When my orthopedist told me to quit because I kept getting Achilles tendonitis I was OVERJOYED. I did power walking for quite awhile, now I just walk one to three miles a day....

@EatKnitSleep2 @HebrideanHecate @virvallis @LadyMont In my first year, I had swimming first thing on a Monday. Absolutely grim in winter, and of course no hair driers and you’ve seen my hair: can you imagine? Dripping down the back of my neck all morning, still wet when I got home….

@Flick @EatKnitSleep2 @virvallis @LadyMont Oh, grim! Ours was a strange sort of raised box affair in its own room.I only went into it once, was almost drowned by a friend arseing about, didn't realise I couldn't swim, refused to ever set a toe in it again, still can't swim. I also disliked the fact that the classes were mixed sex for swimming, another reason for refusal by me.

@LadyMont My son ran the Paris marathon some years ago, and was amused/appalled that the drink stations were offering wine as well as water. It sounds like my kind of race but I don’t imagine such generosity helped everyone to finish the race.

@Sherri_Ingrey @HebrideanHecate @virvallis @LadyMont I wonder why some people get it and others don't. I was never particularly fast, but I remember getting to the end of a 5k, especially on a nice evening with a pretty sunset, and feeling invincible! I truly felt like I would be able to just keep on running forever. Made the preceding 40 minutes of puffing, panting and sweating worthwhile!

@EatKnitSleep2 @HebrideanHecate @virvallis @LadyMont I don't know, I was only good at sprinting to start with, not an endurance runner, but I could XC ski for HOURS and that was I guess a skiers high? Eventually though your inner thighs really feel it and you have to then wait 48 hours because of muscle cramps... for me, it was probably the pain in my heels that kept me from enjoying running...
