       so it seems i made some mistakes/assumptions and, for the past few days, my server rack in "summer mode" has actually been drawing less than 300 watts in total, even running flat out doing mathematical computations. which is way less than the 700-800 watts i thought that it was drawing under load. and only one of those servers is doing most of the work.if i had a bit more capacity in my little offgrid solar array (i have only 200w that i am not currently making use of) it would be realistic for me to power that server entirely from the solar

       i should keep an eye on the local craigslist to see if any piles of old unused 380w solar panels show up in the woods somewhere

       it appears there are indeed a few piles of solar panels in woods or backyards in my area, each for an amount i could probably scrounge dollar bills for from around the housetransportation would be an issue though since i don't own a car, only an e-scooter

       i need to get myself a bicycle cargo trailer. i've checked and it would be compatible with my e-scooter. it wouldn't help much with a solar panel, but it still would be nice to have some hauling capacity, e.g. for groceries

       my main server, as i have it configured in low-power/noise mode, ought to be enough to single-handedly get me within the top 30 producers on mersenne.org, doing P-1 and ECM tests. possibly higher, if i can keep its daily throughput steady.this while drawing only 135 watts from the wall 6 days a week, and about 200w for one day a week, while pre-processing a batch of curves on its low-profile gpu, and leaving headroom for all of the various vms and containers running on that same machine.i have reason to believe most of the top producers are using quite a lot more watts - usually involving numerous GPUs - to obtain a similar rank.

       @linear Wow! I was thinking of turning my old gaming PC with an i2600K into a server and it takes a LOT more then that. Though I bet I could pull the graphics card (1060) to lower it, but I bet it would still draw way more then that (I'm thinking of running mumble, IRC or xmpp, Copyparty, a modded Minecraft server, but I've never done this before so I'm nervous enough getting started that I've been putting it off)

       when tuned for max performance it draws a bit over 300w.when put it into powersave+soundcap mode, the power draw is cut in more than half, and in exchange the system loses about 25% of its performance (specifically for the math tests i run; i can watch the iterations/sec drop in real time. other things might be affected differently)also did i mention this thing is dual socket and you can put together a complete system (with minimal RAM; i have more than minimal) for about $300 on ebay at current prices? used server hardware is great
