       I vividly remember the last time I watched a new Simpsons episode from start to finish. It was Y2K. An entire episode without a single laugh. I didn't crack a smile. I started a few more just to be sure, same, tuned out at the first break.

       The Zuckers (Airplane!) revealed the secret of sitcoms, which is what The Simpsons became once the funny departed for greener pastures (Late Night With Conan O'Brien, Futurama). They learned this after Police Squad failed, getting lower ratings with each absolutely hilarious episode:A sitcom is comfort food.
