       @burnoutqueen@todon.nl that was middle school for me. i'd credit Animal Farm and Fahrenheit 451 more strongly than anything else. but i'd also encountered plenty of well known scifi short stories from Asimov, Bradbury, etc, before that point. weirdly, even in suburban Indiana, the school system i ended up in was really good about having many of these books that are known for being banned these days, as required reading, at least during the time i was there.

       @burnoutqueen@todon.nl i do not think there is any single correct path forward, and i think it's probable that there are many options that would work equally well, that we have not tried. as i see it, most of the reasonable options we have tried in documented history have simply left too much room for authoritarianism to be able to evaluate the other aspects of the systems adequately.i also don't think a traditional revolution is necessary. things would probably turn out better if we can find a way to smoothly transition to a new system without breaking out into a significant amount of armed conflict (although i'm sure there will be civil unrest in any circumstance, as there already is). i worry that, for example, a revolution in the USA today would serve in the longer term to once again let us shove our past under the rug and try to pretend it didn't happen, instead of actually dealing with it and the circumstances that led us here.

       @burnoutqueen@todon.nl more to the point, in threads like this i tend to word things for the benefit of third party readers, because someone else will read this thread and think a different thing than is being said otherwise and will imagine opinions of mine that are different than they are. i'd rather them be forced to imagine something closer to my actual opinion

       @psistarpsiii@tacobelllabs.net i feel you. my family (of three transgender queers with varying physical and mental disabilities)'s doctors keep quitting. i suspect because the medical practice we prefer, is being actively attacked by the current presidential administration for... offering adequate care to transgender patients.
