Well that was a first. Going through security at DTW with precheck I was randomly pulled aside at the metal detector for extra screening.They asked me to get my phone out of my bag which had already been x-rayed, ran an explosive swab over it, then sent me on my way.When they asked me to pull out my phone I thought it was some kind of data collection or pwnage program but all they did was swab it.

Very curious what the reasoning is here.Either cellebrite has got 100x better and faster and can wirelessly pwn a phone with NFC and BT and wifi disabled in a second or two using an antenna disguised as a swab, or they're actually swabbing phones.

@azonenberg @jpm If they don't have the Fancy xray machines that can do some (limited?) spectroscopy, batteries can look a lot like explosives from what I've heard, very similar density.

@becomethewaifu @jpm I've had a brick of business cards pulled out after an agent pawed through my bag, i guess also similar density. But they didn't ask for a specific item they pulled my bag off the xray.This time they asked me for my phone not even knowing what bag it was in

@azonenberg weird. I get bomb-swabbed at least 1/3 of the time I fly. Funniest one was when I was traveling with active military co-worker who got swabbed, he turned to the security guy and said “you’ll find bomb residue, here’s my military ID”

@azonenberg I don't know about precheck or the US more broadly, but I've had my stuff explosives-swabbed numerous times by airport security in a few countries. It just seems to be a random thing, and I guess it makes sense to swab your phone because it's something most people touch after just about any activity, so there's a high chance they'll find traces of substances you've been handling.

@azonenberg had a similar experience at MSP last month, also with precheck — pulled aside and all electronics (phone, laptop, steamdeck) swabbed for the sniffer.got to talk baldur’s gate III with the tsa person at least, after they asked how I liked the deck.

@azonenberg Oddly enough, I don't remember them ever swabbing my hands; usually bags. I clearly remember they swabbed the kids' car seats at check-in at Cairns (Australia) because the swab fell off the "wand" mid-swab and disappeared into the hinge between seat and back rest. I had to unwrap and partially dismantle the seat to get it back out.

@jpm @azonenberg anecdotally, one of the unexpected advantages of transitioning is that my name no longer sounds like an obvious pseudonym, and no longer matches a guy in Georgia who was convicted of crimesI was "randomly" selected for bomb-swabbing all the time before, to the point of it being a running joke, and then it suddenly stoppedanyway have you checked if there's another Andrew Zonenberg who did crimes? if so, try being a girl, worked for me
